I just received my "Welcome to the United States" letter in the mail (actually got two of them)! How long does it usually take to get your "Permanent Resident" card after you receive that letter?

I am off work tomorrow so heading to the SSN office to apply for my SSN card (even though I did check off the box on the DS-230 to apply for one)

I got both around 24 days after POE, and yep, got two copies of that letter.

For the SSN, takes 10-14 BUSINESS days to be in the system after POE. Ensure u bring ur passport.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Congrats Linda! Your card will be arriving soon. For some reason they mailed me 4 separate copies of the "Welcome letter." I felt really welcome!!!

Thanks! I just received my 3rd "Welcome letter" today.....one more to go then....lol I am really feeling welcome too!

I got my Washington license plates today and passed my knowledge test for my drivers license (driving test Sept 6th) but no luck at the SSN office, my name was not in the computer yet from the DS-230 (surprise, surprise....lol) but I couldn't fill out my application for the SSN today because I didnt have my marriage certificate with me (I thought I would just need my passport with the visa in it). Now I have to go back next time I have a day off during the week or get off a bit early.

If one checked off the box on the DS-230 it is supose to come to ur mailbox--no need to goto the SSN office. But it appears to be a hit or miss thing, normally miss, lol It takes 10 - 14 BUSINESS days to see if ur in the system. What one can do is goto http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html download the form, fill it out and take it with u to the SSN office in case ur not in the system, then hand them the form!! I had to goto the SSN office and apply(they had no record from me applying from the ds-230), 1 week later my SSN card arrived

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
