To all,

My wife is expecting (still many months off) and wants to go back to Canada to have our baby... So I the US citizen, she is a permenate resident...What do we need to do bring the little one back into the states?

Thanks

You will need to file a report of birth abroad at one of the US Consulates in Canada... Once processed the little one will receive a US passport.

go to the embassy/consulate website and review the procedure

Why does your wife wish to go back to Canada to have the baby? Is it because she thinks it would be cheaper or she wants to ensure the child also has Canadian citizenship?

If she is no longer a resident of Canada - which is the case if she has applied for a green card in the US - she won't be covered by Canadian health care insurance anymore - it is only for actual Canadian residents and she would have to resume Canadian residency in order to qualify - and that would negate her green card. Once she is a US permanent resident she would have to pay for the costs associated with having the baby in Canada just as she would in the US.

If she is worried that the child won't have Canadian citizenship, the child would actually have dual citizenship whether he/she was born in Canada or the US. She would just apply for a proof of citizenship card from the Canadian government after the child is born in the US and would receive the citizenship card in the mail.

If it is because she wishes to be close to her own mother at the time, well, that is an entirely different matter :) .

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
