Divorce Certificate Translations

Hello,

So I did a search on this before and I came up with about 10 different contradictory responses so I'm a bit confused and just figured I'd ask again and see what people said this time!

My husband to be is from Brazil and is divorced so we have to provide a copy of his final divorce decree with our I-129F package -which naturally needs to be translated into English.

My question is: Can I do the translations myself? Some of the answers I read said yes and others said that official documents like this needed to be translated by a professional translator. If I was to translate them myself I would provide a statement certifying that I can speak both English and Portuguese fluently.

Also, if I can in fact translate this document myself, does my certification statement of my ability need to be notarized? (again, my search showed me both answers!)

For USCIS purposes, if you are competant in both languages (not just speaking but includes reading & writing as well) you absolutely can do it yourself. You will have to sign a certification statement as to your competancy.

Notarization not required

This certification paper that you mentioned....does it need to say anything in particular? I was thinking something along the lines of this:

I, (your name), certify that I am fluent in the English and Portuguese languages,

and that the above is an accurate translation of the attached document.

Signature

Date

Is that enough or should I include something else?

You can leave out the aprt out "being fluent" and simply state that you certify it is a true and accurate translation. The person who translated my documents, a professor of Russian at the University of Vermont had his translations notarized, but I do not think it is necessary. He was notarizing his "statement of certification" NOT the document itself.
