There may be people who are ordering these food boxes or shopping at thrift stores (Goodwill) for families they know of that need it, or maybe it's for an elderly member of their family or neighbourhood. It might not always be the scenario you posted. With that said, I also know there are always going to be people who are like you mentioned as well. What can you do.

Obviously they are not going to discriminate but this is clearly subsidized / donated food for those who cannot afford it. I don't believe this is designed for everyone to get a cheap meal. There is nothing worse than people who can afford something abusing something available for those who are struggling.

There is a girl I know who used to regularly go to thrift stores, obviously for the less fortunate, solely so she could get a bargain.

This is surpluses bought from companies at a discount and passed on to EVERYONE who wants to participate at that same discount. This program is available to anyone who wants to participate, regardless of their particular needs.

Please read up on this program before you start dissing it and the people who participate.

"In need" comprises many things though. It could be that a family's finances are strapped due to whatever circumstances. It could be a sing mom just needing a little help. Believe me, I've used this before and it is incredible! Not only that, the use of this ministry by everyone who wants to participate helps keep it going for the many others whose needs are greater than others. Make sense? I'm glad they don't put an income limit on their program. You never know when you might have a need - whether it's for one month or a few. I'm sure that they also make money from this that goes back into their program, thereby keeping it available for everyone. :)

And who is to say what need is except for the people themselves.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Also, thrift stores take donations and sell to anyone who wants to purchase their things. They then use that money to help the community and the people of the community. If you are giving donations and want to specify exactly who can benefit from those donations, you are probably going to be disappointed.

Look back every once in a while. As more Churches find volunteers to help them with the program, more are joining. The Church we go to for this just joined a few months ago. Also, a lot of bases (army, navy, etc.) are joining in.

I'll definitely keep checking. Thanks, again.

I'm actually going to forward the link to my bestfriend who volunteers at the Alpha Omega Foundation in Oakland....this may be something they'll be interested in to help the community.

The donors to Angel Food Ministries intend to help couples and families stay afloat when times are tough. They don't ask a lot of questions about income, etc., because they have no way to verify them...believe me, there are hundreds of liars out there looking for that cheap lunch. If those who abuse this ministry could only realize that they are actually denying the services to families that are desperately in need, since there is only so much to go around. Just think of the gasoline cost involved in getting those boxes from the central warehouse in Georgia to the churches that participate! That's where much of the $30 per box goes.

Nothing worse than someone abusing a product designed for those in need. If this was walmart offering a $30 box, that is a different story.

These are food packages that have been donated to a charity by someone else, at their expense, to feed the poor.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I was going to say something scathing; but decided to withhold those words today. Just not worth it.

The Angel Food Ministries web sites says:

Who qualifies?

Everyone, there are no applications or qualifications to order Angel Food.

Where does the food come from?

Our food is “restaurant grade” meats, frozen vegetables, fruits, dairy products, etc. which we acquire through our involvement with only the best producers/vendors of high quality, “name brand” foods. Never “seconds” or “day old” type products are involved.

I personally have never heard they have run out of food. You order and pay for it at least 2-3 weeks in advance of delivery. Thus, they are prepared.

Please don't let these people on their high horses scare you off on here. This is a great program. We have had some financial difficulties and have benefited greatly from the program. With gas prices rising and everything else following suit, I can only imagine more people would benefit from this program. Please pass on this information to anyone you know who could benefit. I highly recommend you try it yourself. Some of my friends and family are trying it as well.

We pick up our September box on Saturday and I am prepared to order October's while we are there.

Another person who has no clue what the program is, yet decides to diss people who use it. Anyone who follows.........read up on it first before you say anything against it or the people who use it.

No one is being denied. This particular program requires you to pay $30. There are no freebies here. If a person can afford the $30, they can order. If not, they will need to go somewhere that has a food pantry or other such ministry.

Here is the website again if someone wants to read up on it and then make an informed comment:

Hey I am not dissing anyone using it. I have donate to these guys before.

This is clearly a charitable organization which has put together a product for those in need. Regardless of their open policy, this is not a cheap source of food for people with money. This is not a Costco / Sams club deal.

Food wholesalers work on a different marketing plan that nets them a boatload more cash than a not-for profit food subsidy. Note I did not use the word charitable anywhere there- there are not-for profits where overhead costs can be lowered via tax-deductible donations. Not to knock on you there, but you should know that having an economics background.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
