Hurricane Hysteria..anyone by the coast?

I've been watching the tropics for the past few days and its interesting...a tropical wave destined to become a tropical storm and what most weather models said..a minimal hurricane that COULD affect me in South Florida..

Well at 11pm newscast the "hurricane expert" starts REMINDING people that Hurricane Katrina took the same track and was a very small non-entity until it reached the Bahamas..which this "disturbance" is forecast to go.

Talk about causing a panic! I'll be afraid to be in the streets tomorrow!

22 MAY 2009.....REMOVAL OF CONDITIONS APPROVED!!!!!! :) Citizenship here we come!

I watch it every day. I follow it all from when it is just a predicted wave off the coast of Africa.

We have relatives in Jamaica. That's why I follow it.

Its the same thing with terrorism - when there's any sort of industrial accident, explosion or plane crash - terrorism must always be "ruled out".

I am not seeing the connection......

Anyway, please if you are told to evacuate because of potential devastating weather conditions ----do so! :)

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I'm in property insurance, so we use AIR model software to estimate our losses if there's a storm that will impact our policyholders.

:thumbs: Ah, OK. Cool, thanks...BTW do you guys contract folks to interpret the numeric meteorological modeling/impact models or are they already expanded? I only ask because I'm a meteorologist ( some broadcast, mainly aviation), and we have to expand and interpret our own numerical modeling products. I wondered if you did the same. :)

I know very little about the models themselves - I don't even know if the modelling company has its own meteorologists or if they contract out. We basically get a whole bunch of path and intensity scenarios with the corresponding probability given to us and then we run it against our book of business.

Thanks for answering. I have always wondered about becoming a contract met and being self employed.

I check out this site every day. I LOVE Dr. Jeff Master's blog (left side of page). He speaks in terms I always understand. Plus, he breaks it all down with wind sheers, water temp, dust storms, etc. All of which I really never knew impacted anything until I started reading him a few years ago.
