I am still waiting for my accountant to finish my last two years of taxes. I waited too long to pay my taxes and now I'm concerned. When I move to the States will I be able to collect EI even though I haven't paid my taxes for the last two years? I will pay them I'm just waiting for my accountant to get off his butt and do them.

So baiscally...does receiving EI depend on your tax return being filed from previous years?

I have no idea, but when I read this I was thinking that if you're all paid up then I don't see why not. If however you have outstanding taxes, then you'd have to pay them first. Sometimes the one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing in Gov't. circles I'll say that, but trust me, in this case, they probably would! If your accountant is doing them, surely you'll know very soon if you even have to pay anything. If you do, remember there will be late payment fees...those can be atrocious.

Everything ended up fine in the end...now I have a new issue. I collected EI for a couple months when I first got to the US. How do I go about filing my taxes for 2009 in Canada claiming the EI taxes as a refund?
