we are having my parents co-sponsor because i didn't make enough money in 2006. my wife says besides their i864 they should write a statement letter saying that we are much in love and chat all the time, i talk about her often, etc etc.

now, i know this letter will help, but i don't think it is a requirement for joint sponsor. maybe i am wrong, please tell me if so.

but now she says the statement letter needs to be notarized. is that ridiculous? it sounds like it to me. a personal letter needing notarization?

please tell me what you think. i know she is overly worried about her interview and i want everything to be right

Hey there,

I am in a different country and filing directly with the embassy, but I don´t it´s any different. I think the I-864 requires any such letter. I am having my husband's cousin co-sponsor and he won´t write anything like that. I have a bona fides of marriage letter written and notarized by a friend, but that´s just because we have only been married a couple of months and wanted to prove it was legit.

I hope this helps, but I am sure if you re read the instructions to your wife you will see it is not required, I mean you are not even required to have that co sponsor be related to you, so I don´t think it will add or detract.

I-864 does not require a nortarization because you are signing under purgery. If there is an I-864A involved, that must be notarized. Simply having a co-sponsor that fills out an I-864 also does not require notarization. In addition to all that, I have never heard of any letter that needs notarization for the I-864. My case was a bit different and I explained why I didn't make the 125% poverty lines and it was perfect and to the point. Our petition was approved.

Alls I can say is USCIS recommends notarized letters from friends for the I-751 [removing conditions] backing up a bona fide marriage.

Guess they can ask for such anywhere in the process.

My mother-in-law was our joint sponsor, but didn't write any statement to prove our relationship.

If you are married less than 2 years, you (the petitioner) have to write the statement, though.

Notarization isn't necessary. For DCF Tokyo, we had no document notarized.

Good luck!

The letter would not be required for co-sponsorship, no. I think what your wife may have been suggesting is that you get a sworn affidavit from your parents attesting to the bona fides of your marriage. While not required with your submission, it would actually be a very good thing to submit with her DS-230. Or if thats already been sent in, then it would still be helpful for her to have to present at her interview.
