Fee increase for people who have un-accompained minor travelling

Just a heads up for anyone who has a child travelling by air in reguards to "Unaccompained Minor Fee"

Delta Airlines is now charging $100.00 each way!

That's 200 bucks for then to walk your child down the walkway onto the plane!!

Anyone else think this is highway robbery??! You still have to stay at the terminal until the plane has actually left. And the child still can't be put on the last flight, also no connecting flights.

I bet their excuse will be the price of fuel. I personaaly think they just like to rip people off.

Unfortunatly, Delta is the only airline that will fly from Vancouver to Salt Lake City. So I'm stuck dealing with this!

My daughter's been visiting this summer and leaves Saturday. So now I have to pay 100 bucks before she can set foot on the plane. UGH!

The $100.00 is for them to ensure that your daughter is safely on the plane...that her needs are taken care of during the flight...that if anything happened on the flight, that she has someone that will see to her needs. Your daughter will then be taken from the plane, and brought out to whomever is picking her up, safely, not just leaving her in the airport. I don't know how much it cost before, but I can't imagine that $100.00 each way is too large of a price to pay to ensure that my daughter (as a minor flying by herself), gets back and forth safely.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't have to worry...airline staff or other passengers would ensure that she wasn't left alone, or had her needs met, but I think the service offered needs to be compensated by the airline. I've been on several flights where the unaccompanied minor's needs took up 3/4 of the flight attendants time.

Sorry but they don't give a ####### about my daughter ! In fact 2 American Thanksgivings ago, when we went to send her back up to Canada, there was a snow storm in Vancouver and the West coast. Her plane kept being delayed. Then the chick at the Delta Kiosk said that they could book her on the last flight out instead. I had to remind them that she was a 10 yr old (at that time) travelling alone! She said Oh that doesn't matter. Umm read the rules! it does matter! Then she wanted to fly her to Seattle. I said and how would she get from Seattle to Vancouver. The chick said "Oh she can just take a greyhound or something! " Excuse me?? The weather became so bad that she stayed an extra day and then flew out once the weather cleared.

Also, on her flight back this past summer we had to wait 3 hrs because one of the Stewardesses slept in and she wasn't ready to fly. (Probably to drunk to fly is more like it)

I have had nothing but problems with Delta Airlines, and this is just one more reason I wish I never had to book with them again.

Oh and BTW, I ALWAYS arrive 3 hrs ahead of her flight to ensure she is able to board the plane I go with her all the way to the doors out to the plane so the only time Delta is looking after my daughter is on the steps up to the plane. Her dad does the same thing. I also stay half hour after her flight has left the airport in case there is a problem and they have to come back.

It's a 2 hr flight. in a small plane, not like she is travelling to England or something. She brings her Nintendo DS and plays that. She has been travelling like this for over 3 yrs.- 4 times a year. I think she knows what goes on with an airplane. She says, all they do is walk her up the steps to the plane. She finds her seat herself. throws her purse under her seat and locks her seatbelt herself. She doesn't take up anybodys time. She is well behaved,& well mannered. She doesn't talk to strangers and keeps to herself. (She's a black belt in Tae Kwon Do btw.)

I think the airline should of at least let us know they increased the fee when we booked her flight. The only reason I knew was because my daughter told me her dad was shocked that they increased the fee when she came here. I then went to Delta's Web site and found it on there.

Please take a deep breath. Did I say that YOUR child took up too much time for the flight attendants? You seriously need to get a grip. You sound like I was questioning your parenting or something.

Thanks for the head's up on the fee increases. Because I didn't think it was a rip-off...this is how you respond? Do you think flight attendants are just glorified waitress's in the sky or something? If there is trouble on a flight, then they are there to ensure your safety. A child might need extra assistance.

If this is too much to pay, or you don't like the arrangements, as you sit here at one end, and your ex-husband at the other...then please...feel free to fly with her. If this is about money being in such short supply for you, then I'm sorry to hear this.

I resent that you've gone off half-cocked because I didn't say boo-hoo. Grow up.

I don't know what the fee was before, but that does seem like a lot. It was $40 each way on Air Canada years ago but way less restrictive because they did allow for connecting flights. It's just a shame you're limited to one airline otherwise you'd have more options. Unfortunately, it's the price we have to pay for sending our kids unaccompanied. My son has always been a good traveller too, but now he is old enough to go on his own and is so happy he doesn't have to sit in the special 'waiting room' anymore.

Well it seems all the airlines are doing more and more to get more profits. Don't be surprised when you have pay toilets on the planes in the near future and pay pillow and blankets. Some have already charged extra for window seats and for bottled water now.

They're just finding any excuse to charge more. And no, they don't give a ####### about your kid or anyone elses kid, it's not for the safety, it's for the extra charge they can charge, because they can.

Wonder how long it'll take before you have to pay extra to get the oxygen masks to dispence when the cabin looses pressure or when you'll have to pay extra to have a seat with a life preserver under it etc...

:ot: !!!

Think I read just the other day someones doing that! $7 if I remember correctly! :ot: !!!

First baggage check-in $15? It's not right, but then rates aren't all that much higher, and I can't hardly justify filling my car with gas. What you going to do?

I do think that people might accept a rate increase better than all these special charges. Fire the person in charge of Marketing! Just joking...

There has always been a fee like that with Qantas. Never not been. But then again, I haven't had the problems you have descibed with Delta either.

My kids last major trip on their own was from Germany, to Australia, via Singapore. They were 14.5 at the time. But they were well looked after. And they also had each other. I had also flown through Singapore with them, on the way to Germany, when they first came to live with me, so they knew where things were. they are truly seasoned travellers.

Maybe the fee is now in place, to ensure that your daughter gets thecare/treatment she deserves, whilst travelling solo. I would also make sure she is not seated next to an Adult male on the flight. Qantas always ensures that, with young Children. They are always placed next to either another minor travelling solo, or another person of the same sex.

i know that doesnt automatically erase problems, but reduces them somewhat.

I think she mentioned in the title that this was a fee increase which implies there was a fee, it is just way more now....

$100 bucks each way does seem a bit extreme...

yeah Marilyn, your right,...It's gone up $50USD.

Unaccompanied Minor Fee

It was $50 non stop each way, and $100 for a connecting flight each way. But that changed in Oct 2007, according to some press releases. Now a $100 flat rate each way, regardless of connectying flight or no connecting flight.

I still dont think it is too bad considering,..
