I think the official rule is that you're not allowed to make fun of people for things they can't control. So looks , but wardrobe

How about for being stupid?

Or fat? Or short? Or for living in Albania?

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Make fun of me.

I'm not going to make fun of you BUT... if you lost the chain, pulled your pants up, got rid of the hat (aka realized you are NOT gangsta) you'd be a pretty attractive guy...

But just so you don't think I am just being a b!tch, i'll put a pick of me up for you to make fun of :)

So I take it general consensus exists that making fun of people for the way they look is not acceptable.

Ok, I can dig it.

But what about making fun of people for being stupid? Or uneducated? Or having a weird accent? Or mispronouncing words?

Or for not being able to spell? Or for living in a certain state? Or for having a particular job?

Are those ok?

If so, why?

Everything has context. I'm sure most of us have looked at someone that we thought was unattractive and thought to ourselves, "Damn! She/he is ugly!" But there's a line that gets crossed somewhere...not sure where that line is though.

Can the person control what they look like? If so, then it's possibly OK. If not, it's not cool. Example: If a woman has a goofy haircut or a unibrow or moustache that some Jolen bleach or tweezers would take care of, it's not so bad to make fun. If she has scars from a car accident or assymetrical features that they can't do a d@mn thing about, the line has been crossed. It's not cool to make fun of 'ugly' people just like it's not cool to make fun of 'minority' people - they (we) don't exactly have a choice in the matter of our color, our basic physical features or accidents/illnesses that we may have that leave us with scars and disabilities.

hats are totally gangsta if they're worn backwards

baggy pants combined with a plain white tee is also "gangsta". I make fun of my husband for wearing ####### like that all the time. he's starting to change his ways as far as dressing goes. thank god!

also, rocking the hat to the side or an upside down visor is also "gangsta" and uncool :P

I'll never forget my MIL buying my husband boxers in size small and they were "boys"

I made fun of him for weeks.

I totally agree on not openly making fun of people's looks but the reality is, we all look for aesthetic qualities in nature whether it's home furnishings, a car, or even people...and often times the word 'ugly' is used to describe things, like "That car is ugly," or "That couch is hideous!" For better or worse, it seems like human nature has designed us to make value statements about things based on our sight. I don't think we should be so politically correct to not be honest and admit that some people are not pleasant to look at, just as we openly comment someone who is pleasant to look at...whether it's their choice or not.
