Making fun of people because they're ugly

So I take it general consensus exists that making fun of people for the way they look is not acceptable.

Ok, I can dig it.

But what about making fun of people for being stupid? Or uneducated? Or having a weird accent? Or mispronouncing words?

Or for not being able to spell? Or for living in a certain state? Or for having a particular job?

Are those ok?

If so, why?

Everything has context. I'm sure most of us have looked at someone that we thought was unattractive and thought to ourselves, "Damn! She/he is ugly!" But there's a line that gets crossed somewhere...not sure where that line is though.

the line is crossed when you go up to the person and say "dang, you're ugly"

I had someone do that to me the other day in a chat room I am a mod in... I was just telling them something they shouldn't be doing, and he was argumentative and then he said "dang, I just looked at your profile and you are effing ugly, I am not listening to you" :P

I wholeheartedly agree. A very cruel and socially retarded thing to say.

...and that guy's an a$$hole with issues of his own insecurity. Sorry for that, Marilyn. :luv:(F)

oh it didn't bother me at all.. that room gets really crazy people in it sometimes

I said something to the effect of "wow that hurt, I am going to go jump off a bridge now" ...lol

my dad jokingly picked on me my whole childhood.. he didn't really mean it but it still hurt...

like he used to call me skinny mini miller ..

oh and I remember this one time actually not that long ago... we were eating dinner and my mom's gravy is the bomb and I just said," I like gravy" and my dad said, "you can tell" :(

:( Oh my gosh... what a callous thing to say.

he didn't say it in a mean way, he thinks he is funny ...lol.. I guess you have to know my dad to understand... of course it still hurt a bit...

My ex says ####### like that to my kids. He thinks he is clever and witty. I think he is an A$$. He used to tell them that they would be pregnant by the time they were in high school. ####### kind of father says that to their child?

It's not okay. It's called verbal abuse.

I don't want people to get the wrong impression of my dad.. I love him to bits..He is a great guy, he just says what comes to mind sometimes without thinking.. he doesn't really mean what he says....

no, it isn't verbal abuse.. you really have to know my dad to understand....

My dad is the same way. I can't have dessert there without my dad wisecracking about it. I deal with it by overdoing dessert at their place.

Then I come home and sit on the toilet for hours.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

A bit off topic but, it sure seems like so many people nowadays are always looking for the right time to say something witty, even at the expense of others. I sometimes wonder if its the effect of generations who've grown up watching sitcoms where the whole dialogue is one witty remark after another?

I dunno - I have heard some of the worst misogynist conversations in UK pubs. Granted drink often brings out the worst in people - but when you see a rather overweight man with a face not unlike a potato referring to a girl as "a minger" and "not worthy to suck his #######", I tend to think that such people need to be put in their place.

The reality of course is that guys like that would probably have to break down and cry or beg to get a woman to get in the sack with them; or else resort to date rape or a steady diet of prostitutes.

Sometimes is fun and fine making fun of someone...

Once my family (girl cousins) was sitting a Papa John's, we were all sitting by the window, In front of the restaurant there's a movie theather... In the middle of the meal a young guy, a lil bit taller than our friend Shpat was dreessing so ridiculous that we couldn't help to laugh and take pictures of him...

He made our night!!!!

You hit the nail on the head. People with low self esteem think that by insulting others (for the same thing they themselves are insecure about) brings them status. I just pity them.
