How to change residency?

Hey guys!!! It's been a long time since I've logged in and cruised the board here, but we've been very busy ever since I moved down here, which I know is still not an acceptable excuse..but yeah, it's been hectic to say the least lol.

I was tickled to see how many of the "old-school" VJ'ers are still in here posting away, and even more excited to see fresh faces logging in and sharing their stories. I'll never be able to put a dollar amount on how much this site has helped me from the beginning of our journey, through to the move and adjustment here in the US

Anyways, I was hoping someone might have an answer for this:

I've been sort of naughty and forgot to inform Canada Revenue that I'm no longer a Canadian Resident. My GST checks have been going to my Granny's for the duration of my time down here, and she has deposited about three of them for me (she didn't know any better, since she always deposited them when I was still a resident, since I moved around so much.)

That being said, I did TRY to call Canada Revenue a few times, but the 1-800 number I call never works. I've tried about 6 times since I moved down here, and the stupid phone number they have listed is either always busy, or out of order in some way because I always get this annoying dial tone whenever I call.

Does anyone know of a form to fill out and send in, or a different number to call and let them know that I've moved countries? This is driving me nuts lol!

Normally one when they file there last taxes in canada , would put in the space on the VERY front pages of the forms the date they Ceased to be a Cdn resident. Since your a Cr-1 , that would have been the date you crossed the border and activated ur visa, if you stayed after that! Your now dealin gwith the International office of revenue Canada, I'm sure if you google it, you will find the #. I have called them in the past with success. Best of luck

Just did a google search and found this - the GST people have non-resident phone numbers that are not toll free (however on the page I found it says they will accept collect calls), you choose which one to call based on which state you have moved to:

Yes, keep that GST money separate and be prepared to send CRA a cheque for the full amount as you are not entitled to it after you leave Canada. They will demand it back. If you don't pay it, they will take it out of any income tax rebate owed to you when you file your last taxes. Notifying them of your new address will ensure that they send you the appropriate tax return forms.

Contact the MP's office where you used to live and ask them to change your address information with CRA. They will request a permission statement that contains your relevant information (S.I.N., former address, new address, effective date) authorizing them to act on your behalf but they can do this via fax.
