Well, I don't know where else I should post this query. Mods may move it to some other sub - forum.

I would be coming to USA on K1 visa :

  1. How much money can I bring to USA and am I allowed to convert it into US dollars ?
  2. Can I bring jewelery for my US fiancee, would customs allow that ?
  3. I take some anti depression meds, can I bring one year stock with me ?

I am really clueless on these points, any advice would be welcome.

My advise... (personal advice)

How much money can I bring to USA and am I allowed to convert it into US dollars ?

My fiance brought $5,000 with her when she first came in.

Can I bring jewelery for my US fiancee, would customs allow that ?

Yes, you can bring jewelry. Should not be a problem with customs.

I take some anti depression meds, can I bring one year stock with me ?

yes, no problem as long as they are for personal use. Not for commercial.

Just my 2 cents.

Others who can answer with more authority will confirm this or elaborate on it, but I'm almost certain that funds in excess of US$10,000 must be formally declared, and that the paperwork is daunting. The scrutiny by officials would be intense, to put it mildly.

I'm not certain about an upper financial value of jewelry, or the declaration thereof at Customs.

Be VERY cautious about bringing medications! If you can procure a doctor's signed prescription for the exact medication, the dosage, and the amount, it could help. The pill bottles should likely be labeled with that information, too. I would not be surprised if some or all medications could be seized, depending on what they are. Do not mess with U.S. Customs!

So, here you have the two "extremes" of the answers, from Dr. Mirage and from me. Someone with access to the actual rules will surely be able to answer with authority. Meanwhile, you might try http://www.customs.gov to see what you can learn on your own.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

You can bring up to $10,000 without problems into the US. You can bring more but you have to declare it and supply proof of what is to be used for, ie business investment, etc. However I would recommend an easier method for amounts more than $10,000, a bank transfer is more common form of money transfer betwen countries. There's paperwork involved but it's handled by the banks as a simple matter of information forms.

As to jewerly, if it's personal, it shouldn't be a problem tho you may have to declare it depending on the amount. I'm not sure about how much is allowed. If it's gifts then it's listed in the I-94 form as to how much is allowed.

As to medications, you need to have a doctors prescription for it (it should allow the amount of medications you're bring into the country) and be aware some medications are banned in the US. The US Custom's web site list what medicatons aren't allowed into the US. Other than that I don't think it's a problem.
