Hi people,

I have just recieved my SSN no today and was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers as to when I can apply for a driving license.

Im from the UK and I do NOT hold a UK license.

Can i go ahead and take it or do I have to wait untill I am married (which is only 2 weeks away :D )

Ive looked on the Ga DMW site but couldnt see anything to help.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

Many thanks

I'd say go ahead and apply for a learner's permit. You will need to bring some prove of residence in addition to identifying documents; utility bills would be good but if you don't have anything proving residence bring a statement from your fiance(e) indicating that you are living with her permanently. The only problem I see is that you're on a temporary visa, but that problem will persist until you have a GC, so it shouldn't matter. Give them a ring to find out what their current requirements for non-resident legal aliens are.

At the DMV, you can also pick up a booklet covering all the rules and regulations needed to pass the theoretical test. I have no idea if you need to take it before getting the learner's permit, but the test is not that easy (even if you have driven before).

If I remember correctly (I got my GA-license in 99), GA allows you to have a number other than your SSN on your license. Make sure to take that option because SSN used to be default.

Good luck!
