Iran may require non-Muslims to wear colored badges

The "Zionist newspaper" is the Canadian National Post, if anyone is wondering. Seems like the Iranian press often uses "Zionist" to mean "Western." I've heard many theories about how the story got there, but ... well, however it happened, the truth remains that the paper published a verifiably false story whose intent was obviously to make people think Iran=Nazi Germany.

They've (Nat'l Post) since taken the story down.

The details of that interview with the Jewish MP say that the bill actually dealt with standards of dress for women but didn't differentiate by religion.

Of course, everyone who heard the headline is now convinced that Iran is going to force religious minorities to wear badges, and at least 90% of them will never hear the truth. Mission accomplished! A bajillion people now think Iran is trying to become the German Nazi Regime and the fact that it's completely untrue doesn't even matter.

rumors are they have nukes. i looked on wilkipedia about that not too long ago

They're the only Middle Eastern country to have them. And they'd like to keep it that way...

Unfortunately, this situation does not exactly encourage their neighbors to aspire to be nuke-less, but rather to even the playing field by getting nukes of their own. And quite frankly, who could blame them ?

Don't have enough room to post the Palestinian atrocities. But those not in denial know the truth.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Absolutely - but I don't think you can argue, at this point that one side is necessarily any 'better' or 'more civilised' than the other. This constant ####### for tat murder is self-perpetuating - has and will continue to drown itself in blood.

The point here is that the Israeli state has and continues to authorize its military (a government agency funded by Israeli taxpayers) to assassinate terrorist suspects with no regard for anyone else caught in the crossfire.

There's no justification, in any civilised society for the murder of civilians.

Actually, Palestinian casualties are not given nearly the amount of coverage in the U.S. media as Israeli casualties.

In the first study period ABC, CBS, and NBC reported Israeli deaths at rates 3.1, 3.8, and 4.0 times higher than Palestinian deaths, respectively. In 2004 these rates increased or stayed constant, to 4.0, 3.8, and 4.4, widening still further, in the case of ABC and NBC, the disparity in coverage. An additional sub-study of deaths reported in introductions revealed a similar but even larger disparity. The networks’ coverage of children’s deaths was even more skewed. In the first year of the current uprising, ABC, CBS, and NBC reported Israeli children’s deaths at 13.8, 6.4, and 12.4 times the rate of Palestinian children’s deaths. In 2004 these large differentials were also present, although they decreased in two cases, with deaths of Israeli children covered at rates 9.0, 12.8, and 9.9 times greater than the deaths of Palestinian children by ABC, CBS, and NBC, respectively. Given that in 2004 22 times more Palestinian children were killed than Israeli children, this category holds particular importance. We could find no basis on which to justify this inequality in coverage.

http://www.ifamericansknew.org/index.html

Since 2000, when the current Intifada or "uprising" began, 121 Israeli children have been killed, and 722

Palestinian children. However, if you depend solely on American mainstream media to get your information, you'd never even know that.

I don't think you can argue, at this point that one side is necessarily any 'better' or 'more civilised' than the other. This constant ####### for tat murder is self-perpetuating - has and will continue to drown itself in blood.

Very well put.

However, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that, in fact, it's the American taxpayer who is bearing almost the entire burden of funding the Israeli military, rather than the Israelis themselves.

While terrorism is clearly being committed by both sides - the differences between them are more than semantic.

We're talking groups of disparate militant groups, with varying ties to the Palestinian government which is arguably not in total control of its people vs. an organized heavily armed regular army, which represents a direct extension of the Israeli government, and by association - the Israeli people.

There's no justification for any terrorist act - but its important to stress the difference between disparate groups of militant individuals committing atrocities and those atrocities committed by an extension of an apparently 'freedom loving' government.

They've (Nat'l Post) since taken the story down.

This newspaper has a history of publishing misleading and deceptive articles about Muslims in general, as well as about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in particular. They got busted at it just last year:

Canada's largest newspaper chain, CanWest Global, is being criticized over its use of the word "terrorist" in stories about the Middle East.

The owner of the National Post and dozens of other papers across Canada is being accused of inappropriately inserting the word into newswire copy dealing with the Middle East, thereby changing the meaning of those stories.

One of the world's leading news agencies, Reuters, said CanWest newspapers have been altering words and phrases in stories dealing with the war in Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Reuters told CBC News it would complain to CanWest about the issue.

The global managing editor for Reuters, David Schlesinger, called such changes unacceptable. He said CanWest had crossed a line from editing for style to editing the substance and slant of news from the Middle East.

"If they want to put their own judgment into it, they're free to do that, but then they shouldn't say that it's by a Reuters reporter," said Schlesinger.

Perhaps the Iranian government characterizes a lot of Western media as "Zionist," but one must admit that in this particular case, painting the National Post as a "Zionist newspaper" does not seem to be far off the mark.

while I don't condone (or even read for that matter) the Nat'l Posts articles, it would still behoove the other news agencies who followed it to maybe check their sources before they print it or put it on a TV ticker!

Its not the first, nor the last time, that something like this has happened. And unfortunately for the world, no one will remember the retraction, they'll always remember that Iran is making non-Muslims wear badges and that all the 19 terrorists of 9/11 came from Canada. People would rather be angry about something, even if its false.

Watch though... I bet the whole badges issue has some truth to it. Iran's president already wants to wipe Israel off the map. Why would a badge be so far fetched.
