My husband's greencard expires November 23rd 2008, and he wants to go to Morocco for the holidays in the beginning of December. I didn't even consider that his greencard is a problem. We are putting the paperwork together to remove conditions and are going to file at the end of this month. However, I've heard that it takes longer than 3 months sometimes. How can I plan my husband's trip without knowing if he'll even be allowed to leave the country? What should I do?

As long as he has the NOA and his passport with him, he will be fine to travel.

My friend just came back from Jamaica doing that and had no issues whatsoever.

If you don't file in enough time for him to get that NOA (about a week or two after filing), he cannot leave the country and returns again.

NOA1 + expired green card are necessary, I think.

Shikeys..............I meant NOA and Green card. What did I say passport for? Although, he needs that one too. Thanks, Jenn.

Just as Jomo's_girl said, as long as he has his passport and NOA letter, he'll be ok.

Actually, I just got back from Canada yesterday and forgot my letter (letter basically states that the holder has a one year extension for work and travel but does NOT say to carry with them). My greencard expired yesterday, the same day I flew back. I was a little worried that we would miss the connecting flight meaning that we would have flown back today with an expired Greencard but we just caught it. The immigration officer looked at my card, checked his watch, checked the computer and then said 'you just scraped through'. He told me to always carry my letter from now on as the card would expire at midnight. I thought the system would say I have a one year extension but I guess it is not that advanced. I honestly thought it didn't expire for a few more weeks and only thought to check once we arrived at the airport. It was all a little too close for comfort.

Have a fun trip.

Yeah, why doesn't the system say one year extension? How hard can it actually be for them to set that up?

Thats what I keep thinking... they have the ability to have that info... just like when the scan your visa, green cards or passport... information pops up. When I visited Jamaica some time ago, they scanned my new passport and saw my info was put in wrong. My husband and I asked what info they had, and it basically told them any and everything including my old passport numbers . So I think it's possible the US can do that too and probably do...

Mailed N-400 March 6th via priority certified mail and Rec'd 9th (confirmation by USPS)

NOA rec'd: 3/19/2009 (date 3/16/2009, priority 3/9/2009)

Biometrics rec'd 3/26/2009, appt 4/9/2009

ID: 07/06/2009

Oath: 07/16/2009

SSN updated: 7/16/2009 (not received yet)

We got both our passports scanned in the US and in Jamaica. They also scanned his expired green card.

I was a bit nervous when "they" were reading and re-reading the NOA1.....but, in the end. Everything worked out just fine.

You would think  that with all the technology and the "chips" that are in the passports and GC that there should be no need for you to travel with that silly piece of paper.

Hey Mindy.

"They" didn't even look at Damien's letter...just his passport with the stamp in it. I was nervous as well.

Hope you had a nice trip.

Stamp? An infopass stamp?

Yeah, USCIS took forever to mail his NOA1 so we made an infopass appointment the day the GC expired. They took the card from us and put I-55 (something like that) stamp in his passport. We eventually got the NOA with "duplicated" stamped all over it. We never received the orginal.

With a stamp, they wouldn't need to see the NOA at all. It's pretty much the same thing.
