The majority of Georgian soldiers were deployed near Kut, 175 kilometres (109 miles) south of Baghdad in the province of Wasit, a hotbed of smuggling near the Iranian border.

...

The Georgian brigade has ... faced powerful Shiite militias in the south and al-Qaeda forces in the Diyala region, northeast of Baghdad, regarded as the most dangerous area in Iraq.

The first of the Georgian forces withdrawn from Iraq over the weekend have already arrived in Gori, 15 miles from the South Ossetian border, The Times can confirm, and appear to be in no mood for peace.

"We will drink Russian blood," said Badri, one of the contingent newly arrived from Iraq.

I'm just trying to understand this but from what I read, 99 percent of the people in South Ossetia had voted for their independence. Up until the current Georgian President, they were defacto, independent from Georgia. Although this is complicated, there's no justification for the Georgian military to fire missles at the separatists - there was no provocation...so in essense, they initiated this....even if Russia might be going overboard with their reaction to it.

Georgia fired upon the separatists to provoke Russia? Interesting. I was wondering why there has been relative peace between the separatist's independence and Georgia and now suddenly it's a problem for Georgia. Very sad for all the people there.

Typical western response. This thread is as unbiased as KKK rally.

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

The report I read in the BBC said the separatists fired first. Fortunately, no one disrupted our airlift, because there are a large number of combat experienced Marines (not currently otherwise engaged) that have a HUGE can of whupass for any foriegn power that fires on American forces, and I don't believe (speaking from experience) that the geography matters much to them. So bring it on.
