Fitz looks at Tradee with the eye of a mad man – a killer, a man thirsting for revenge. He blinks rapidly, trying to clear the haze and warped vision of pain engulfing him. Fitz doesn’t realize that he is rocking from foot to foot.

Chantell stood in the shadows of a corner of the hospital. She watched Delmar’s mournful apology to Melodee. She watched Melodee wrestle with her feelings, then whispered what appeared for all intensive purposes to be a final goodbye. Melodee looked like death trampled all over her face and body tonight. She no longer looked peaceful and beautiful. Chantell realized that Melodee would never be an ugly woman, but she did look like she had aged 20 years if a day. She wanted to run from her hiding space in the shadows to comfort her friend, but decided not to chance it. So, like a coward, she waited until Melodee made her way down the hallway and disappeared.

Chantell: Baby? Shotta – I mean Delmar? It’s me baby. I know it took me a minute to get here, but…but…. OH JESUS BABY! What happened to your-your handsome face? What did they do to you? OH GOD! Don’t worry Delmar baby. I’m here. I love you so much Shotta. Don’t worry at all. I’ll will make them pay for this! Rasscllaatt puzzyholes!

Chantell kissed Delmar tenderly, carefully avoiding those areas that were bruised and/or bandaged. She kissed the very tip of his nose, one of his eyelids, suckled gently on his bottom lip and ended with a small peck on his neck. Chantell moved away from his bedside just long enough to grab a folding chair, then she sat next to her man’s bedside.

Delmar had long since slipped into the throes of a full blown coma, and was no longer capable of responding to Chantell’s touches. Chantell bowed her head and softly wept as she stroked Delmar’s hand over and over. She began to feel a chill in the air, and realized that she had fallen asleep. Chantell moved to pull the sheet up over Delmar just in case he felt the same chill. She bent to repeat her kisses of love and devotion, and knew immediately that he would no longer suffer in this life. On the other hand, her suffering and heartbreak had just begun. The cold, clammy feel of death-touched skin felt strange and foreign against her lips.

Chantell: *whispering* Why baby? Why? We finally have de chance fe stawt we life. Yuh neva fight fe me. Why yuh give hup? Why yuh nuh fight Shotta? Why yuh lef mi? Jah knoa mi still love yuh same wey still. Mi nuh care bout yuh face mash hup. Mi will still love every inch of ie…so why yuh lef mi yereso? Shotta come back baby. Fight ie baby. Please fight ie.

Nurse: Ma’am. I’m sorry. But, you are going to have to step aside while we take care of things with your loved one. I’m sorry.

Chantell: Okay. Yes missus. Can I do anything to help?

Nurse: No. Thank you. I know this must be hard for you to witness. Are you his next of kin? We need to get direction from his family on where to transport his body and his few personal effects. There was another woman here last night. My co-workers said that she claimed to be his fiancée. Do you know how to contact her?

Chantell: She is NOT his fiancée! She does not need to b-be contacted about my man. I will have an answer to you later today about where to take h-h-his…about where to take him.

Oh God! This cannot be happening. *sobbing*

Nurse: I’m sorry for upsetting you. I-I just…it’s just. Nevermind. Okay, the sooner you make arrangements the better. Let me know if you need anything from us ma’am. Good day.

The nurse and other hospital staff leave Chantell sitting on the folding chair, next to a now pristine white, empty bed. A bed waiting for its next patient.

Tradee and Fitz watch the sun come over the horizon to signal daybreak. They both feel a indescribable surge of energy course through them at the same time. Fitz literally slumps to his knees, and drops his gun. Tradee in turns feels an overwhelming sense of loss and sadness.

With the breaking day, Tradee can now make out the small burial marker. He temporarily forgets his curiosity, and moves to get the gun out of Fitz’s reach.

Fitz: Rasta. I’m sorry man. I don’t know what came over me. I couldn’t think straight. It was like I was bloodthirsty. I came here because I didn’t want to take another life. I would have hurt myself before I allowed myself to hurt another person…even if that other person deserved it. My brother needed me to avenge his death. But, but…it’s like something just happened to free him and me. Frowzy is really gone now. He was haunting me man.

Tradee: Eehhnn. Why are we here Fitz? Whose grave is this?

Fitz: Huh? Oh. It-It’s my ex-wife, S-Sasha. I-I come up here sometimes to think and clear my mind. Th-this is the first time since I met…since I met Toya.

Tradee: Respect. Why are you seeking comfort from a dead woman when your wife is afraid to breathe waiting for your return back home?

Fitz: I don’t expect you to understand Rasta. I loved Sasha with everything in my being, then I lost her. Jr. and I lost her while he was still a baby. I didn’t know anything about caring for a baby. I shut myself off from everything, and let my grandmother raise my son. I never thought I could love another woman as much as I loved Sasha man. I mean…I mean I came here every other night after my last fare. I lost the love of my life, and I didn’t think it was possible to love like that again. At least not until I laid eyes on Toya. Then, when she allowed me to kiss her…man. Those lips…those eyes…my dimples. I can’t. I just can’t.

Tradee: You can’t what Fitz? You just can’t what?

Fitz: You don’t get it. She deserves better than me Rasta. Toya…man…bumboclaat. I have never felt like this before my yout, not even with Sasha. Sasha was my life…but…but Toya? Nah man, I can’t do it to her. Frowzy dying on my wedding day was my sign. I have to stay out of her life. Frowzy’s death was my sign to move on before it’s too late.

Tradee: Too late? Too late for what bredrin? Wait. You can’t be thinking…

Fitz: I don’t deserve her man. If I stay in her life, it won’t be long before…before. I can’t loose her Rasta. Toya is my universe. Why is God taking away all the people I love on this Earth? Why did he have to take Sasha when we needed her so badly down here? Why did my brother’s blood spill over nonsense? Toya is better off without me hanging like John Crow over her head. I can’t take loosing her too. I can’t.

Tradee: Ah man. Rass! Fitz you can’t believe that bredrin. You aren’t responsible for Sasha or Frowzy dying. It was their time respectively. Their purpose was fulfilled. If God was removing people from you life, how do you explain all of your friends…including me? How do you explain your grandmother still full of life and vitality at 94 years of age? And your mother? I have never seen a woman love a man more than Toya loves you bredrin. She has not faltered in her love. You never had to compete for it. She handed it to you on a silver platter. Don’t do this Fitzroy. Come on. You can’t do this to her…she doesn’t deserve it…nor do you. What you two do deserve is each other, and some time for healing. You and Toya have an entire lifetime ahead of you…you can’t leave Jr and Toya man. Don’t walk away from love because you are scared.

Toya: Mya, I still can’t believe he would turn on me like this. I mean what did I do to deserve this? He promised that he would never treat me like this…and he is no better than Ian, and to think I married him after only knowing him for a week and a half! I deserve whatever I get. Help me get my stuff together. He wants me to leave. I’ll leave, but I won’t be back.

Mya: Calm down T. Fitz loves you, but he is hurting right now. He is probably still in shock. I mean think about losing someone you love like that Toya. He watched his brother get shot and killed with his own eyes. He is NOTHING like Ian and you know it. He doesn’t really want you to leave, and you don’t want to leave either for that matter.

*Mya takes things back out of Toya’s suitcase just as fast as she adds it. She shakes her head, and exhales loudly.*

Come on honey. Try to be rational and calm. Think everything through before you make a decision you will regret for the rest of your life. You two belong together. I’m sure that he and Travis are talking now, and a lot of things will be better when they get back.
