Melodee washes the remaining traces of make-up from her face, grabs some paper towels and pats her face dry. She briefly entertains reapplying her make-up, but shrugs and exhales loudly. No amount of make-up will erase the dark circles and puffiness around her eyes, or the lines of worry creasing her forehead. Melodee takes a final look in the yellowing mirror, and exits the restroom.

Melodee slowly walks the hospital cooridor toward Delmar’s bed. She is so tempted to just walk out of the hospital and never look back. But, she would only be running from problems that were currently dictating her future. Delmar appears to be sleeping peacefully. She stares at him, trying to find one familiar trait on his once handsome face. As if sensing her presence, Delmar moans deeply and opens his eyes to mere slits.

Delmar: Me-Mel. *coughs and groans* I-I…

Melodee: No. You should rest Delmar. Do you need a nurse?

Delmar: Arrr! UUmmmhhhh. N-n-no M-m-m-m Mel let-let m-me f-f-i-finish.

Melodee: Delmar please. You don’t have to do this. There is nothing left to say. The nurse told me that you were asking for me. I’m I’m…*whew* I only came to tell you that it’s over for us. I just found out that I’m pregnant. I’m going to start my life over somewhere as far away from here as I can. I want you to know that this is not your baby…nor will it ever be…no matter what any test may say. I wish you the best that life has to offer. Likkle more Shotta.

Delmar: M-Mel. Pl-please don’t leave! Ba-ba-babe…mi sa-sarry. Mi-mi k-knoa yuh vexed…mi kn-knoa. Nuff sufferation and trial m-mi br-br-bring pon yuh. Mi sarry babes. Mi love yuh laang time…yuh-yuhsee-seemi? *cough* B-bbummboclaaaat! Eh? Yuh-yuh bb-breed Mel? Whaa? Ah fe mi pickney dat! Nuh Melodee…nuh bodda wid da-dat. Yuh cyaan tek tek tek wey mi pickney! *crying* Mel please nuh lef! Mi sarry baby…mi sarry.

Melodee swipes angrily at the tears falling down her cheek. She walks over to Delmar’s bedside, leans over and kisses him gently on the bandage around his head. She reaches out to stroke his hair, thinks better of it, and slowly lowers her hand back to her side.

Melodee: Goodbye Shotta.

Delmar screams out for her, loud gut wrenching cries fill the hallways. Nurses rush by her…hurrying to the spot she just left. Melodee stumbles blindly toward Ian’s room, not quite sure what she should do once there.

Tradee and Mya hop in the car and take off toward Fitz and Toya’s small house. They reach the house in record time, and Tradee is the first one to reach the door. *knock knock*

Tradee: Mya, stay there. You don’t need to get upset because it will only upset Jr. Okay baby…okay. I know she is your best friend. Well, just take it easy okay. Slow down. Bumboclaat!

Mya: I’m fine Travis! We are not so delicate that we will break if someone looks at us! She is my best friend! I have a right to be here! I told you that I’m fine. Did she answer? Toya? T? Toya honey open up. It’s me and Rasta. Toya come on…open the door. Travis kick that damn door in! Move out of the way, I’ll kick that b*tch in!

Tradee: Toya? Toya let us in. Where is Fitz? *knock knock knock* Toya?! Mya calm down! I’m not going to kick the door in, and neither will you.

The two stop glaring at each other, and look back toward the door slowly creeping open.

Mya: Toya? Honey? Oh Toya! What happened sweetie?

Toya: He-he left. He’s g-g-gone Mya. Why won’t he answer my-my calls? *openly cries again*

Mya: Oh honey! It’s okay. I’m sure he is fine. Maybe, he went to clear his head, or help with funeral arrangements. Are you sure he has his phone? I mean maybe he lost his phone or something. Calm down T. Fitz loves you girl. He’ll be back. I promise.

Tradee: Did he tell you where he was going Toya? Why are you crying? Stop crying Empress, and look at me. Now, we can’t help you if you won’t tell us what happened. Mya get her to calm down, and I’m going to make some tea and call Fitz.

Mya: Okay baby. Can you bring a cool facecloth too? I want to clean her up a little. Okay Toya. Let’s go talk. Do you feel like getting dressed? Hush baby. I’m sure you are overreacting. Fitz didn’t leave you. What did he say to make you think he left you? Did you guys have a argument after we left?

Toya fills Mya in on Fitz’s weird behavior since he awakened earlier. She also recounts as much of the phone conversation as she can remember and comprehend. Tradee walks back into the room with the cool facecloth and a tray carrying three cups of mint tea sweetened with condensed milk.

Tradee: He mentioned a puppy show? Eeehhhnnn?? Okay Empress, think and tell me what he said again. Try to remember everything you can.

Toya attempts to repeat each word of her last conversation with her husband as she daintily wipes away her steady stream of tears. Tradee doesn’t like the sound of the bits and pieces of patois that he gets. He shakes his head, runs his hands over his dreads and walks out of the room to try Fitz’s phone again.

Tradee whispers to Mya to let her know that he is going for Fitz, and not to worry. He kisses her neck and silently signals to his beautiful fiancée that everything will be okay.

Toya: Rasta did you talk to him? How is he? Where is he? Where are you going? Wait for me, I’m coming too.

Mya: No honey. Now is not the time. Your man needs a man’s wisdom and insight right now. Trust Rasta. He will take care of Fitz honey. Come on, lets lay down okay. You have to trust us. We all love you. Fitz still needs you. He needs you to be strong and understanding right now.

Toya: But…but…Mya he is my husband. I’m supposed to be there for him. Why is he pushing me away? What did I do? O-Okay. I just love him so much Mya. I don’t want to loose him. I can’t. I just can’t.

Toya allows Mya to lead her to the bed, and she collapses wearily. Mya climbs next to her friend, and holds her in a friendly and sisterly embrace. The two friends talk and rock slowly until they are in deep slumber.

The doctors work feverishly in Ian’s room. Ian was bleeding profusely, and went into cardiac arrest twice, with the hospital staff resuscitating him both times. After what appears to be hours, they manage to stabilize his unconscious body, and slowly begin filtering out of the room one-by-one. Melodee stands off to the side, watching for the last person to exit his room. She can’t believe that she still has more tears to shed, as she has never cried so much in her entire life.

Melodee: Um…excuse me…Doctor…ma’am. Uh. What’s going on? What’s wrong with him?

Dr. Denton: Ms. Hallaway, it’s been a long day for all parties concerned. Why don’t you go home and get some rest. You will need all the rest you can get in your condition. Pleasant good evening.

Melodee: Please doctor! I’m not going anywhere. I need to know…I-I-I deserve to know what is happening to my child’s father. Please.

Dr. Denton: *exhales sharply* Hmmmmm. Okay. Well I still have to honor patient confidentiality. However, I can tell you that it was a little touch and go there for a minute with your friend. We managed to stabilize his condition, and he is resting peacefully now. I’m sorry I can’t tell you more than I already have.

Melodee: Okay. Th-thank you Dr. Denton…for-for everything. Can I s-see him?

Dr. Denton: Um…sure. For just a minute. But, you have to promise no more attacks, and you won’t do anything to disturb his rest.

Melodee: I-I-I promise. I uh…I was wondering ummm. I was wondering if I could stay overnight. I-I mean…um…um. I’m all he has. I’m like the only family he has here in Jamaica. I-I don’t want him to wake up in some strange place alone.

Dr. Denton: Ms. Hallaway, that is against hospital regulations. But, considering all that has happened between you two today, I guess I can bend the rules this once.

Melodee: Ohhh…thank you ma’am. Thank you kindly Dr. Denton.

Dr. Denton: That’s fine Melodee. Just remember what I said earlier. If I get any word of you causing havoc for my patient, I’ll….

Melodee: You won’t ma’am. I promise. Thank you again. Good night.

Melodee walks quietly into Ian’s room, not entirely sure what she should expect. She closed the door behind her, and looks at the sleeping form in the bed. Ian looks troubled even in his slumber. He had tubes and wires coming from every oravice in his body, and even a bag to relieve his bladder. Melodee is surprised that none of this turns her stomach as it normally would. As she looks at the lines of trouble and worry marring his otherwise handsome face, she wonders if she truly knows what she is willing walking into. The only thing she knows for certain is that her unborn child will never want for anything. Her baby will have the best life Ian can offer them.

Melodee: H-hi b-baby. I was so worried. The doctors wouldn’t let me come back for you until now. I-I sat outside of your room worried out of my mind. Baby they won’t tell me what’s wrong with you because I’m not officially your wife. But…but we can change that as soon as you wake up. I mean if you will still have me…and…and our baby.

Melodee rubs her flat stomach, and walks over to rub Ian’s head. She kisses his forehead, the tip of his nose, both cheeks and grabs his hand gingerly.

Melodee: I’m not fighting it anymore Ian. I think I am falling in love with you, and I can’t do a thing about it. I’m so scared baby. What happens when you leave us because of AIDS? I can’t believe that I can’t make love to you on our wedding day. I promise that I will take care of you, and I’m not leaving your side. Just don’t leave me and our baby Ian.

Last post for the night...Enjoy.....

Tradee parks the car, and watches Fitz pacing back and forth. He is hurting for his friend, and feelings of guilt almost make him climb back into his car. Tradee realizes that he cannot walk away when the sun catches something metal in Fitz’ hand. Tradee begins running up the hill toward Fitz.
