Ian and Melodee exchange nervous glances – each for different reasons. Ian is ashamed to admit that he got his a** kicked royally. He swore on his mother’s grave that Melodee would never find out that Delmar’s brother was responsible for his internal bleeding and broken ankle. Melodee is silently afraid that he will tell the doctor that she dashed him off his rental truck trying to get to another man. She does not want to see the inside of a prison cell.

Melodee: Excuse me Dr. missus. Does it matter how it happened? Just tell me what you are going to do to get my husband better.

Dr. Oliver: Calm down Mrs. Royale. I know little is making sense to either of you at this time. However, the more information we have the better. Now, as you know, your husband lost a lot of blood. Unfortunately, Jamaica does not have the best resources in our supply at the local blood banks. We normally ask relatives or friends to donate blood for their loved ones. Mrs. Royale, would you like to donate blood for your husband?

Ian: Uuu-oooo. Doctor. My wife is expecting our first child. I would prefer not to risk anything happening to our unborn son or daughter. I’m sure you can work around this as money is no object. I just want to get out of here. When can I leave?

Dr. Oliver: I see. However, I hate to inform you Mr. Royale there are some things that money can’t solve. If we don’t have compatible blood in our reserves, your money won’t help you. Actually, we could make a request to have blood flown in. But, that is very expensive, and you may not have that type of time to wait. I don’t want to frighten you unnecessarily. Melodee decides to drive the truck to Kingston instead of riding in the ambulance with Ian, figuring they will need transportation when he is released. During the ride, she is surrounded by silence only briefly interrupted by the hammering of her own heart. She curses to herself, and tries to wrap her mind around how things got so out of hand so quickly. It feels like just yesterday when she was celebrating her anniversary with Tran. Now, all she would have was memories…memories of a dead man.

Melodee: Yeah…I’m still in love with a dead man. Why am I chasing after a man I barely know? Mi nuh knoa…bumboclaat. Obeah mus did dere. Melodee tosses the phone on the passenger seat. She turns the radio in the SUV up to the top decibel in a futile attempt to escape the truth of Chantelle’s words. Melodee only decided to get with Shotta when she saw him smiling after Chantelle. True, she had heard the rumors of his sexual prowess among the silly schoolyard girls. However, the spark had not been ignited until she spied the secret glow on Chantelle’s face. She was bored to tears with Rasta and his romantic notions of love. She craved rude boy loving and was determined to find it. She rationalized her behavior by saying that she truly was only with one man – albeit twins. The twins compromised her one perfect man in her adolescent mind.

Melodee glanced up from her phone just in time to see that she had passed the University Hospital by about 100 yards. She hooked an illegal u-turn and headed back to her bypassed destination. After pulling into a parking space, she threw the transmission into Park, and repositioned the rearview mirror to peer at her appearance. The luminescent quality of her skin, that often betrayed her true age, appeared haggard and ashen. Melodee gasped at the sudden influx of age that peered back at her from the mirror. As she reached to touch her face, she noticed the uncontrollable tremor of her hands. What happened to the calm and often aloof demeanor she prided herself on? Melodee rang her hands helplessly, trying to decide what she should do next. She grabbed her purse and began to reapply her make-up. She jumped down from the truck delicately, and sashayed toward the hospital entrance.
