Something that happened tonight provoked this question. While dining out with another couple, I was horrified to find out that some people do not have a clue on how to tip. This is my system... I (and my husband) tip anywhere from 18- 20%. Nothing less, but possibly more, depending on the amount of needyness we have displayed.

I am just curious how everyone else tips.

20% Anything less is an insult.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

WELL... It really depends on the service, if it's bad I don't tip, if it's good I am fair and if it's excellent I "overtip"

20% Anything less is an insult.

Something unique to the states is that. I learnt that back in 2006 when I was watching a World Cup game in a Scottish themed bar in downtown St Louis. I had some food and drinks, and the bill was about was about $28, so I rouned it up to $30 (perfectly reasonable where I'm from). When the waitress came to collect the bill and her tip, I thought she was about to burst into tears!!

My American friend explained that perhaps I should have left at least twice the amount I did, because it would have been better to leave nothing than the couple of bucks I did!!!

I apologised the the young lady (who had provided exemplary service) and promptly doubled the tip!!! Took a bit of getting used to did that, but to be fair, the service you receive stateside is far, far superior to what you get here. Those waiters/waitresses depend on their tips, and their service reflects that.

20% but if the service sucks I will give them 10-15%. One time I didn't leave a tip for a woman because the service was horrible. She wasn't busy as she was just standing talking to another server and staring at us. She was going to every other table but not ours. I actually had to stop another server. Normally I'm not like that but if you have to sit around for like 20 minutes before someone even greets you then it's lame. I almost left but we had a little kid with us and she was crying because she was hungry.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

What about bartenders? They seem to want to be tipped too. Just as a point of reference, what's the standard there? Not as much as eat-in table food service I assume?

15% for very basic service: takes order, serves food, gives bill, and is fairly professional

20-30% for outstanding customer service: polite and friendly demeanor, makes personal recommendations, takes order, serves food, makes sure needs are taken care of, takes extra step to ensure satisfaction, makes eye contact, and is very professional

customer service is my pet peeve. I worked fast food as a teen and have had past retail experience so I know what it is like on the other end and I knew that if not for the customer, there would be no need for my position. I would come to work tired, feet hurting, issues at home, and would still provide excellent customer service. So, when I receive fair customer service, the tip is very basic....15%

Excellent service deserves 20% and more (depending on the degree of that great service) and a note of thanks on the bill and sometimes a word of praise to the manager.
