You're probably right in saying that "It's worth a try". The local office that I'm going to is about

1-2hrs drive (so it's not that local after all) away from where I live and shouldn't be to busy I think. And if I explain things nicely (call ahead of time maybe too) then perhaps it could work. And besides, anything to make the immigration process seem like it's going faster is definately a good thing.

I think as long as you have your appointment letter, then going early is okay. Of course some offices are going to be picky about things, but most seem to welcome you if they are not busy. I think explaining about long drives or in the area already for other things might help.
