I think people forget the Olympics is the one place you're supposed to put politics and differences aside.

It is not a forum for us to tell other countries what we think about them or their style of government.

exactly!!!

i mean, the last skit the chinese even did was about unity and happiness...and then IRAN is boo'ed...im annoyed

regalame una sonrisita con sabor a viento

tu eres mi vitamina del pecho mi fibra

tu eres todo lo que me equilibra,

No other country who will host the games should even attempt to out-do the ceremony in Beijing! The beginning with the lit up drums, woah! And the boxes moving like waves, and the lit up people, there were so many amazing things. Maybe a bit extravagant, but as they've been saying China was trying to impress the world. Whether I agree with Chinese politics or not, no country will be able to touch that opening ceremony. Unless they want to spend way too much money. I don't think it should be attempted.

I just watched like 30 seconds of the "beach" volleyball. It looked like they were playing on a court that was the color of sand. #######?

The sand of a beach volleyball court must be specially selected. It must be smooth, fine and without impurities. In order to find the proper sand for 2008 Beijing Olympics, the whole 18000km coastline of China were carefully searched. Finally the proper sand was found around Hainan Island, which is actually at the east end of the Chinese mainland.

ETA: The ceremony was absolutely fantastic!

I've always loved the Olympics, this year I am even more excited because 2 people I know are in it! The goalie for the Italian national team is my mom's best friend's son, I have known him since the day he was born...and also one of the Australian swimmers, Felicity Galvez who holds the WR for the 50 mt butterfly, is a friend I met during my honeymoon in 2004!
