This poll was inspired by the video that Steven posted about FOB vs FILAM. They slightly touch the the topic regarding some FILAMs who don't speak tagalog, but they call themselves Filipino American.

So USC, are you going to let your SO to teach your kid/s to speak tagalog/other dialect?

Non USC, are you going to teach your kid/s your language?

Why? or why not?

I speak my mind, so please don't take it personally.

Well, my kids are already 10 & 8 so at least they know the basic already, my mission is just for them NEVER to forget how to speak the language when we get to the US... and if my fiance and I will have another child, I will still teach him/her my language + dialect. I have my fiance's full support on this, in fact he said we would need to teach him the language so we could all use it inside our home.

Why or why not?... because I simply want to... because the language is their greatest link to other Filipinos, anywhere in the world... because I want them to be able to communicate with friends and relatives fully well everytime we visit... because, polyglots impress me so much so I want my kids to become one also... and because Dr. Jose Rizal said: "Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa sa hayop at malansang isda."

Wife and daughter arrived when she had just turned 7 and I insisted that wife only speak English to her. She was in the ESL class at school for I think a year.

Daughter is now 13 and speaks like she was born here. Daughter can't speak the Cebu language, but she is a U.S. citizen, living in the U.S., so no great loss.

My son is about 1 when we came here and so we pretty much speak English since hubby doesnt know much about tagalog and but i wanted my son to learn my language and hubby wants that too and so my hubby is self studying tagalog right now and he is teaching my son.. its so much fun when i hear hubby teaching my son like "Ganon" and my son saying NONON and OPO. he cant speak much yet and i started talking to him in tagalog too, based on the survey, children learns language faster than adults.

Eva and I will definitely teach our children Tagalog or Ilongo. Well mostly she will. I will be a student too. I fully understand Tagalog but cant speak it well and totally regret not learning. Wasn't my fault. I am Filipino-American and resent it when Filipinos say I am not Filipino because I cant speak the language. I don't know why my parents didn't teach me to speak Tagalog when I was young. I find the language difficult to learn now that I am older because of the grammar: the prefixes and stuff. Hopefully Eva can teach an old dog new tricks.
