WASHINGTON - Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is admitting to an extramarital affair but denies fathering the woman's daughter.

Edwards tells ABC News that he lied repeatedly about the affair with a 42-year-old woman but says that he didn't love her. He says he has not taken a paternity test but knows he isn't the father because of the timing of the affair and the birth.

ABC says a former Edwards campaign staffer claims he is the father, not Edwards.

Edwards was a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president. He placed second in the Iowa caucuses last January but dropped out of the race a few weeks later.

Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2004.

You have to admit the National Enquirer doesn't have a particularly sparkling reputation for the quality of its journalism...

It should follow then that any apology they deserve must be back-handed.

I don't think the NYT or any of the dinosaurs of the old media even know how to investigate anymore.

Not that I condone affairs, but I do think that politicians have to be sexually squeaky clean to be good at their jobs. I guess I have spent too long in France, another of those dubious commy countries :D

I agree AJ, it's not something everyone does but I think the standards that people expect from their polticians are just stupid. In normal life people have affairs and yet can still be great businessmen, doctors, or whatever, but politicians are supposed to be immune? Get real people. If it wasn't such a huge deal, they would never lie about it and the whole thing could be something that is part of their private lives and remain private.

Same goes for those pesky neo con closte homosexuals too. Because they are homosexual doesn't autmatically make them evil people, but the way people get so het up about sexual matters, well, I find it too silly.

One wrinkle to bear in mind: this isn't just any spouse-cheats-on-spouse story.

Elizabeth has cancer.

He used her as a prop in his run for President.

That takes him to a special level of slimeball, in my mind.
