It's the question every presidential candidate must be prepared to answer, but when it was posed to Barack Obama by a 7-year-old yesterday, the Democratic senator seemed at a loss for words.

Appearing before a packed high school gym in Elkhart, Ind., the young girl asked Obama why he is running for the White House.

"America is, is no longer, uh, what it could be, what it, it once was," Obama said haltingly. "And I say to myself, I don't want that future for my children."

Talk-radio superstar Rush Limbaugh, who featured the clip on his show today, marveled that Obama didn't immediately speak of running because he loves America.

"You're running for president of the U.S., and you run down the country to a 7-year-old?" said an incredulous Limbaugh.

Limbaugh suggested someone should ask Obama to name the period when, in his opinion, America was as it should be.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

All Limbaugh laughs aside (the guy's a walking hypocrite joke.. would make a good pastor), Obama's clearly a politician, so making political points out of his ### is his MO.

However, what he said was:

"America is no longer what it could be.. what it once was".

And he's right. This country has sunk and isn't what it could be. The U.S. has been in dire straits economically, losing ground to other countries, and the shitty foreign policy the Bush Administration employed is a failure, making the country no more "safe" than it was pre-9/11.

A President doesn't need a flag jammed up his ### every time he/she speaks.

But Obama is right...America is NOT what it once was. I think that Obama, instead of mollycoddling the child, was honest about the state the USA is in at the moment. He wants a better country, he wants to improve it - I can't fault him for that.

Be honest with your kids, don't fill their heads with false impressions of their country. By being honest with them you can help THEM improve it. After all, as is often said, they are tomorrow's presidents, senators, bums, etc ;)

 Yep - Ooh the controversy!

Soon followed by the usual whiny strains of "If McCain had said it and blahdeblahdeblah".

Why do people insist on being so over-sensitive about this #######?

I expect its more "proof" of how Obama has no respect for the country of his birth.

I mean if he's not wearing lapel pins, or refusing to put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance, he's crushing the spirit of America's youth with 'guilt-ridden' meathook realities.

Seriously - whenever I hear this guff, its like the country never moved on from the McCarthy era when nudge-nudge wink-wink innuendo could get you labelled a traitor. If anything it does put one of Obama's comments into sharp relief - namely that one about bitter people falling back on "God and guns". The more of these side-snipes I hear, the more I'm inclined to believe that his comment was spot-on.

These idiots should all be ashamed of themselves - and no doubt they would be, if only they had the capacity for adult maturity in the first place.
