My wife just gave birth a few days ago. I am currently visiting them here in Japan but my 90 days will be up in October. I was hoping I would be able to bring everyone back with me at the same time because my wife's interview is scheduled for Sept.

The thing is, today the nurse mentioned to my wife that the baby needs to get her shots. Does this have to be done in Japan before she is allowed in America or can she get them after coming to America? The reason I ask is because she was saying the shots have to be spaced out, like 2 months at a time.

If we have to wait it looks like I will be flying home alone and wont see my family again until December.

Any advice would be great.

First of all congratulations on the new addition to your family! :)

I would guess that since your child is a US citizen that you could wait and get them in the US. The other thing you could consider doing is getting the first set now and then getting the remainder in the US. Also don't forget that your baby will need to get a US passport before being able to enter the US. I have heard that can take some time so you might want to look into that soon. Of course for official answers I would ask the embassy, they should be able to tell you what needs to be done. I would guess that they get these questions quite often. :)

Definitely visit your US Embassy or Consulate, whatever they call it with two passport photos of your baby, the birth certificate, your identity as a USC, and heck, even bring your wife and baby to get that passport. I assume your wife is free to come. You don't want to leave your wife and baby, I certainly would not and immigration at our crazy ports of entry go much smoother when a US citizen is around, you should have 2 out of 3.

Regarding vaccinations, it's your responsibility as a parent to get those done, in my situation, neither my wife nor her daughter were required to get any shots before they came here, but we were in a different situation and had the I-693 to contend with, that is when both of them really got pumped up so to speak. Wouldn't even bring that up at your embassy/consulate but if you see people foaming at the mouth, keep them far away from your baby.

Your early days with your baby are the most important ones, they are a lot smarter than you think, spend as much time with your baby as you can, makes a big difference when they get older.

Now I am giving you a direct order, bring your wife and baby with you!!!!

Thanks buddy!

Yeah, Ive got all the paperwork and stuff ready to go for her passport. My wife wants to wait a few weeks though because she said its not good to take a new born out of the house so soon.

I think youre right though. I should contact the embassy for offical answers.

From what Ive read and my wife has told me that sounds about the same as in Japan. Gotta go to the embassy with my wife and daughter, get her photos taken and then fill out the paper work for her passport.

I think thats probably a good idea too, to go ahead and get the first round of shots now while we are here.

My mother tells me the same thing every day through email. haha

Yep, I want to be as responsible of a parent as I can. Ill do some more reading but probably in the end Ill end up contacting the embassy just to be sure. From what Ive read so far it seems it should be okay to get my daughters vaccinations in the US after we all get back.

Thanks for your advice and kind words

Worse part of traveling with a newborn on the airlines are the pressure differences, helps a lot if your wife nurses him/her, but once altitude is reached, the baby will clam down. Gently holding the babies nose and gently blowing into it's mouth will help to release the pressure, but very very gently.

Youngest son seems to prefer Japan over the USA, went there on a scholarship to study advanced Japanese, came back for a year, wasn't happy here. Went back to teach Japanese kids English, haven't seen him in three years now, is in Kanagawa-ken, Japan.

Yes, new mothers do tend to be overly cautious, but have to respect that to maintain peace in the family. Here in farm country where large family, family farms were once popular, put a newborn out in the field after a couple of weeks.

in my case, when we went to the embassy(me,my hubby and baby)they just gave us a paper saying we should call the courier(fedex)to send us the paperwork we need for her including requirements and everything.. since my hubby left and came back home there he needed to sign consent, something like that...and u should have documents stating ur physical presence in the US,proving that ur a US citizen, something like that..

Maybe I am an idiot for assuming that a US Consulate in Japan offers the same services to a USC that the Venezuelan Consulate in Chicago, IL, USA offers to a Venezuelan citizen.

Step daughter required a passport, we called to make an appointment, brought in two passport photos, her birth certificate, the original and a copy for them to keep, her Venezuelan ID also with a copy, one hundred dollars US cash and was out of there in less than an hour with her new passport. They did in a sense give us a hard time in asking why we wanted that passport for her since she was a permanent resident of the US, I just snapped back without thinking, we own properties in Venezuela, staying here just long enough to make a lot of money, then plan on going back. They were happy with that and wished us luck.

In like manner before I married my wife, she and her daughter went to the US consulate in Venezuela for visas with a letter from me and with photos, in less than an hour walked out with US visas. We really wanted to get to know each other before getting married, and that included both my wife and daughter, they made several trips and I made a couple down there.

Seems to me if you have a passport for USC proof and a birth certificate for your baby and two photos plus a couple of bucks, should also be around a hundred, they should do the same for you, but maybe I am an idiot, but you do run across some lazy people telling you to fedex.
