After a lot of reading it seems the alien (A number) can be found above the K1's name on the

I-797 (approval notice of action)

and also it can be typed in red ink on the visa its self

my problem is they are completely different numbers

The visa number has 8 digits starting with the number "8"

The Notice of action has A095 xxx xxx

any thoughts?

The visa number is something different; it is going to be needed in the forms when you adjust status (when it asks for your visa number). What you probably got confused is this: when you enter the US at a PoE with your K-1, the PoE officer will write your alien number on the top part of your K-1 visa (by ink). But no, your K-1 visa does not write the alien number on it.

Anyway, to avoid confusion always remember that the Alien Registration Number always begins with the letter A. In your case it is A 095-xxx-xxx (Note: of course the PoE officer may e.g. write on your visa

A 95-xxx-xxx instead, by omitting the first 0, which is common, they do that, and it is the same thing).
