Hooking up an Atari

Although the cable that comes with the atari looks like an RCA, it isn't. It is actually a coaxial cable passing an RF signal. Since the RCA inputs on TVs have separate plugs for audio and video, it won't accept it all coming from one cable. But, the coax plug on your TV will. It's the screw-on plug on the back of the TV, usually labled CABLE/ALT. It's the plug that the cable from the wall goes into, if you have cable TV.

You will need a type F Coax to RCA (female) adapter. Put the atari cable into the adapter, and then screw it on your TV's coax plug.

This is basically the same thing that Steven suggested, but either way you will need that adapter because the RF is a screw-on, not a plug-in. Should be less than 4 bucks at RadioShack.

Exactly Matt, thanks. I can confirm that the Atari 2600's output is not an RCA signal as it doesn't send anything to the TV's RCA inputs.

That coaxial adapter is exactly the one I'll be purchasing today, on my first wedding aniversary...

OK, only a quick stop on the way to dinner tonight.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
