Can you get the name changed in your passport? I know that in the US, you can once you are married with your marriage license - not sure how JA works -

Edit - found it - Have your married name added to your passport -

If you intend to go by your married name, I think it will make life easier as far as getting a DL, SSN, etc... once you are here.

i don't think i can change my passport before my interview date. however i would think my green card and my ssn # has nothing to do with my passport because the greencard and the ssn# was based on why u received the visa in the first place. my reason being i got married to a us citizen but i will do more investigation on this.

I would go to the passport agency - from that form, it seems like a simple thing to add your married name to your visa - Something you can definitely accomplish before you arrive here, and you won't be getting your SSN until after that happens - Easier to do it now then to have your passport in your maiden name and everything else in your married name

Believe me when I say it is a hassle to renew your passport from the US. You have to send it to NY. They send it to JA. Back to NY. Back to you. The pictures MUST be taken by the picture people or Sears. Walgreen's pics and the likes that we use for every passport, are not accepted by JA. It also takes months to renew.

I would do everything I could to get it done in JA.

hey all

my passport expires in 2012 and i was told by someone from NVC that my CR1 visa will be reflect the name in my passport{my maiden name}. would my green card and my ssn # have my maiden name or my married name?

Hi, Have you filled out the I-130 already? if no that would be the opportunity to fill it out and sign it with your married name (under on the I-130 section c. question #1 under Name (family name in CAPS) and if you're already did then your next chance to update your green card will be when you adjust your status as a permanent resident, meanwhile if you travel to avoid confusion for the discrepancy on last name on your passport and green card is to carry a copy of the marriage certificate along with those document i think it will assist you in clarifying any questions, and in reference your ssn card, what you need to do to have your married name on your ssn card is to bring your marriage certificate to prove the change on last name, here is an excerpt from the application "you will need to prove your identity and

provide documents that support the change and establish the reason for the change (e.g., marriage

document) must identify you by both your old and new names." (is on page 2 on this application, here is the link, http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf. I hope this help you. Good luck!
