Green Card will expire outside the country

Hello again,

I was about to file my re-entry application when I found out that the re-entry permit expires the day the Green Card expires. I'm going to be outside the country when my Green Card expires so it doesnt make sense to apply for a re-entry permit that will expire before my scheduled return to the US. I'm going to stay outside the country for about two years and my Green Card is expiring next year!!! What should I do? I heard\read that I can apply for a new GC abroad, is that correct? Is it possible to get a re-entry permit once I obtain my new Green Card abroad?

too many questions! please guys provide me with as much information as you can. All suggestions are welcome and I'm gonna check in official websites for more accurate answers...I just need your guidance at the moment.

If you are staying out of the U.S. for 2 years, you may very well no longer be considered a permanent resident. Why will you be gone for so long? The answer will make a difference in giving the correct answers to your question.

I'm accompanying my wife who has a field research in Egypt. Her field research is long and we can document that. We dont want to be separated for a long period of time.

If you can't change your mind, are you sure you still have one?

Is your greencard a conditional greencard (valid a total of 2 years) ?

Yes! It is conditional and it will expire in July 2009.

If you can't change your mind, are you sure you still have one?

Best to make an Infopass and ask an immigration officer what your options are.

As an aside, while I understand not wanting to be separated for a long time, would it be possible for you (or both of you) to return to the US periodically during the two-year stretch? For instance, you could return a month or two before your GC expires, using your re-entry permit, then file for removal of conditions, then leave again with your NOA (and another re-entry permit if necessary). Alternately, since your wife will be living in Egypt for a long time, you guys may be eligible to do DCF at the embassy.

But do ask an immigration officer!
