Hi guys! My husband and I are thinking of going to MN for some fishing. The problem is, we don't know where to go (yet) and have no idea which lake is the best for fishing  . Anybody here who can provide us some information? I tried asking my friend Google and he gave me a long list of lakes, which made me confused even more  . We are also looking for some camping grounds. :P

Thanks in advance! Replies will be highly appreciated.

Um, there are some 15,000 lakes in Minnesota, so talk to fishermen and you will probably get at least a thousand different answers!

What kind of fish do you want to fish for? Walleye, muskies, northern pike, perch, bass...different lakes have large stock of different fish. I know that my brother and my dad, both of whom are avid fishermen, love to go to several different places.

Ones I know they repeatedly go to:

Lake Waconia--relatively close to Minneapolis

Lake Mille Lacs--a few hours north of Twin Cities--HUGE lake with lots of Walleye

Brainerd Lakes area (hundreds of lakes there--also a few hours north of the cities)

Good luck and have fun! This is a gorgeous time of year in Minnesota!

There are tons of places to go, but if you want really good fishing, i would suggest somewhere in northern Minnesota.

BWCA if your into portaging and hiking. Glass, cans, ect are not allowed in the BWCA. You can get a day pass to go in and camp outside the BWCA at an entry point. Whatever you carry in you have to carry out. Only canoes and kayaks are allowed into BWCA. You can rent those.

You can charter boats if your not a boater on some of the bigger lakes like Mille lacs. They will take you to some good spots to fish.

Good luck!

Restrictions in the BWCA depend which lake your on. Some lakes only allow canoes, other lakes limit engine size to either 10-25 horsepower. There are a couple lakes, more on the edge of the BWCA area, that do allow larger boats.

Unless you want to go way up near the Canadian border by far the best place will be the "lakes" area near Brainerd or Lake Mille Lacs

YMMV

I love the Boundary Waters, but it usually takes quite a bit of advanced planning--there are limited numbers of permits on the best entry points--people get them MONTHS in advance!

Kinda like my earlier question about what kind of fish are you going for, what kind of camping do you want to do? Do you want to have your car nearby, do you want to carry all your gear in to your campsite, do you want something really remote? MN has it all, but some situations it would be really helpful to know the area and/or have lots of transferrable experience.

Looks like we'll be fishing for walleye (my husband's fave fish) and we don't have a trailer (we'll be camping in a tent and sleeping bags) and yes, we want our car nearby and all our gears in to our campsite. Basically, we are looking for a place where everything's there.

Many campgrounds around.. you will not have a problem finding something to fit your needs..

Another good lake is Leech Lake near Walker, MN

YMMV

Thanks, fwaguy! Have you been to any of these lakes? I think we will be going to Mille Lacs Lake. I have checked their website and it looks pretty good to us.
