Family Book or Carnet de Famille is small book with the martial history of couple in it, including children that they had. In some countries, the man will have one book for each wife, while others have all wives in one book. It is given in addition to the marriage cert.

In the book, names of parents of bride/groom are stated, as well birthplaces and dates. Later is added the children born to them (as said above). Family Book is still valid upon divorce (as prove of divorce) and prove for the children.

In countries, like Morocco and Algeria (also) this book is used ... for all issues that may require you to prove your marriage.

Has nothing to do with Islam, as non-Muslim also get this same book. As I said simply Book of Marriage.

In jordan, we had to get a family book when I lived there, and when we go back, we will add zaid to it...I always thought it was a way for the country to keep Census...

Actually, many countries around the world issue one of these. Everyone in Argentina has one...it contains your photo, fingerprint, National Indentification Number, civil marriages, births, divorces, when and where you voted, your addresses of where you've lived, etc. It is a very handy document.

Used for census but also for quick documentation when you need to prove marriage and birth. Like for me, they asked for the "Family Book" to prove our marriage so that my baby can have my husband's name. Without it, the baby would be registered as fatherless.

Staashi: I have no idea out side of North Africa where this is used. I came to know of this type of book only here. But you are right, real handy!

My understanding is that its basically registering your marriage and/or children. A family "paper" or book just documents your family(marriage) relations.

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

You can apply for a family book at the US consulate for your country.

I don't know how we will be able to get one since we were married by a judge without the requisite 2 Muslim witnesses at our wedding...will we have to get married again?

I'll add teh caveat that in Jordan, it is only SINGLE children in the family book. Once you marry, if you are male you are expected to start your own book and if you are female you will enter your husband's book.

thanks so much everyone for your feedback

we were married and had gotten an arabic marriage certificate but NO family book

this is the first time I am hearing of it...hubby never mentioned it

so it is NOT automatically given when you get your certificate of marriage??

well I am going to apply for one at the US consulate next time I return to Morocco, just so we are covered.

sandrila,

You can apply for one at the Moroccan consulate in NY (not the US consulate in Morocco)...you'll just have to send them copies of documents. Check out their website for more info.

In Jordan it is a different office from the Sharia Court that handles this. The Sharia Court administers the marriages/divorces. The Civil Status and Passport office handles things like ID's, Passports and Family Book (Daftar Al Ayleh). I used this book as additional proof for my I130 petition....only had to get it translated into English.
