Why don't they just take all that money they're spending on this and flush it down the toilet. It's such a waste.

Diana

You don't think this design will reduce the number of entries without inspection?

The fence idea is making me sick.

Why?

No, it'll never work. I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it. When people are living miserable lives, living in miserable conditions, watching their children starve, and see no way out of it but jump over a fence, trust me, they'll do it. They'll go over it, under it, around it, but somehow they will do it. Hunger and poverty are very powerful forces that make you do things that you thought you were not capable of doing.

So yeah, it's a waste of money.

Diana

Maybe we should just surrender, and announce that anyone who wants to come in will be welcomed with open arms. Heck, we can even use the fence money to provide free transportation to the USA, and free room and board ;)

Don't understimate the power of the illegal immigrants.

Diana

::sigh:: this is a legal immigration board. Have you no shame?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

From what I understand there are quite a few objections to this - not just in relation to immigration: environmental impacts as well as legal issues related to the division of property lines and building on private land.

Which have all been waived.

I'm sure. I understand it's happening - though I'm not really convinced that its the best use of money and public opinion on the subject seems mixed, at best.

Money - yeah, it likely isn't the best way to spend it, but it is a good way to spend it IMO. Had they built a fence out of thin wire, only 3-feet high, with no concrete underground, that would have been a total waste. This sounds like it may actually have some impact, which is good.

As for public opinion - the elected representatives of the American voters (i.e. Congress) passed this into law. This is the voice of the people, the only voice that matters.

Yes I understand that too. We can still point it out however.

To meet his deadline, Chertoff is using sweeping authority Congress granted in 2005 to waive 36 federal laws protecting water, air quality, endangered animals, and native American sites.

This is the part that really bothers me. Probably because I'm a bleedin' heart commie...

This is true, I think. We've seen it so many times. And not just in our country either. Heck, look at what East Berliners did to get out before the wall came down.

I don't advocate illegal immigration, I can't when I've been going through this process legally, but I can understand the great lengths some people go to because of hunger, poverty, etc. I'm a mother...I would do what I have to for my kids if it came down to it...

This is about the biggest waste of money on half-assed logical thinking I've seen in a while. With the money they're spending, do you really think they can stop people who desperately want to get here with a damn fence, even with barbed wire? No. Illegals will go under it. They'll go over it. They'll go through it. It won't stop a damn thing. If enforcing immigration laws is the idea, get more border patrol.

May as well set a pile of money on fire.
