I know of someone who did it before their marriage, I waited until after...not much of a difference, just depends on when you need to have the SSN for banking and such...goodluck when you go to your local SSA, hope you dont get a person who doesnt know the rules for K-1 (had a bit of stress over that the first time I applied, but i still got my card in the mail after 2 weeks)

Hi everyone..just wanted to know when can i possibly start applying for my SSN? Would that be after we get married or i can do it prior to our marriage?

Upon arrival, allow 2-3 weeks before applying for your SSN. The government system takes this long to show you are in the system. Before marriage or not doesn't make a difference.

In answer to your question .....You can either do it now before the expiration of your I-94 or after you get married (same time you file for AOS)

I arrived in US the last first of july and just applied for it in person a day ago. It went smoothly and no complications :

I had the SSN form filled out with my passport as a proof of identity and to show my I-94 card.

have a good one (F)

Actually must be done within 14 days of the expiration of the I-94 (within 76 days of entry), otherwise the SSA will refuse.

YMMV

I agree, apply right now. We didn't know the rules and went to apply for my wife's SSN shortly after we got married. Unfortunately, her I-94 had expired and we were in the process of applying for permanent status. They would not issue a social security card until she had her green card. It was a pain in the butt.

It takes about two weeks to be entered in on the system following POE - if you go to the SSA after two weeks they should be able to find you in the system and do all the paperwork for you (at least that's what happened to me). After that they say it will take up to two weeks to receive the card: I got mine in a week.

Whatever you do, don't apply if you are not yet in the system after two weeks - if you have it done manually it can take 4-6 weeks to process then another two weeks to receive the card (or so I have heard from other people). It is best to just wait a week then pop back to the SSA again :)

Hope this helps!
