I dunno about medicating the guy or forcing him to lose weight. Somewhat ethically dodgy to improve someone's health so they are "well" enough to execute.

But this sort of thing does make the DP rather farcical - I don't support it on principle, but from a practical standpoint it makes you wonder why they bother with it at all.

How about they just give him a good poke, if they can't find the vein they release him, if they can find it he is executed. Seriously I know of similar situations as in overweight (that much and more), poor viens, and they always manage to get them in the end (not literally, don't go there). That is a really poor strategy IMO. If it works and he gets out of his sentence I will be pissed!

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- ..............Cooey -- 5-feet-7 and 267 pounds -- had poor veins when he faced execution five years ago and the problem has been worsened by weight gain.

.............

I just think that this guy's legal team are grasping at any excuse for a stay of execution. 267 pounds for 5 foot 7inches isn't exactly astonishingly huge ( not from what I have seen wheeling around Walmart lately anyway)........If they cannot get a vein in his arms, then they need a better IV technician plus there are numerous other sites to inject him.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

It isn't just his veins - its his body-weight. There are probably limits on what amount and concentration of the chemicals can be used on a person that don't take account of body-size. If you have a larger body you need more for it to work.

This comes on the back of that moratorium of lethal injection - when it was suggested that certain drugs were inhumane because they caused excessive pain. There was also some question about the methods by which it was carried out - that it often took numerous attempts to find veins, and that there had been a number of botched executions.

It's nice to see we have so many experts on putting people to death in a humane or depending on the blood lust level, not so humane fashion. Progress in action, excellent.

The choice is not between execution and letting them go free, but rather exectution and life imprisonment and for various reasons I would prefer to see the latter and the death penalty banned everywhere.

The policy as it exists today isn't the one they had years ago where people could take their children and "make a day of it" while hurling rotten fruit at evil-doers.

We have a raft practical and ethical questions - bereft of the sort of emotional "hang him by the nads" mentality that goes on in the public domain. I'm not sure why they bother with the policy to be honest - it does seem very backward in a lot of respects.

Interesting that you think that serious debate and thought about such an ethical question is merely sitting on a high horse.

Luckily this isn't a debate that most people sweep under the carpet and some day the US will rid itself of this barbaric method of punishment.

Which just shows that you look at this question in very emotional terms as apposed to examining the nature and ethics of it.
