SSN outside of 76 day K1 window?

Hi all,

I made a stupid mistake regarding applying for my new wife's SSN. I knew I couldn't wait until the last minute, but time got away from me planning and then having our wedding and honeymoon, and I accidentally waited too long to file. (Boo on me.)

I know from reading the guides that you must apply for the SSN before day 76 of the 90 day K1 visa. Unfortunately, we were going to go today, and I realized that we are now on day 78. :(

My question is this: if I'm not worried yet about work authorization (she is not going to work until she gets adjusted, gets a driver's license, etc), is there any way to get her an SSN now only for things like bank accounts? Or do I have to (or is it best) to now wait for EAD?

Thanks!

Some banks require the SSN for opening an account or adding her to an account, but that's so individual and I don't know where you bank. I couldn't get a library card without my SSN.

If you've applied for AOS, EAD, AP...you'll have some documentation shortly..maybe 3 months? Then you could get started in obtaining other ID then.

Hello,

Maybe you can go on SSA (the office) and try.

Maybe you can find a agent who don't know the rules (that happens often that agents don'k know all the rules of their jobs  ), so you can have you SSN :star: .

good luck

Yes, I was afraid this would be the answer. I might call and ask to see if there is a sympathetic ear, but its my own fault for not following easy directions. :( Oh well, will just make my next few months a bit annoying. Epic sigh.
