Sarcasm

I was actually thinking that CDNS used sarcasm a little more perhaps? Perhaps it's more dry humour that i'm thinking of though.. :)

I just know when I make a joke (sometimes including sarcasm) people never get it :P

My husband does not get most Canadian comics. I will be laughing up a storm and he is like..I don't get it. I think it has to do with the dry humour. Canadians have more of a sense of British humour than American humour.

I think generally speaking American's laugh at other people better than they laugh at themselves. . most CDN humour that I find hilarious usually includes making fun of something about CDNS :) tee hee.

I guess I can agree with that...

However I seem to come from a place that had a lot of sarcastic people.....and came to a place with a lot of sarcastic people....and I can be one myself...

Ok IM outta here :P

Hahaha!

Good, good to see all the sense of humour on these pages.

When you really look at sarcasm,

what is it?

What does it fulfill?

What does it destroy?

If you became hyper-aware of it being a negative or a destructive force would you continue to speak with any sarcasm?

Do you want to keep regurgitating what you see, or do you want to live in a world that is safe and loving and inclusive?

Sarcasm separates.

Divide and conquer....remember that?

With individuality and the pride that comes with that...."the need to oppose, resist and exclude to maintain a sense of separateness"...an "us against them" attitude that clouds the very essence of being human, in the loving and accepting way. We are pack animals. Let's make more community...larger and larger!

Yeah!!! :D

Oops, there I go, blah blah blah....oh it is based on love and yet, I really just need to get a shower in, and find coffee, and wake up.

Granville Island is a little oasis.

I'll get my coat...

You know when they say " What you give is what you get returned"

Well in my case I use sarcasm with all those stupid "It's all about me, I am the only one right here" kind of person. I will always be nice in the first contact, but some people just push it with me. So after a while of getting their #######, they get mine... I am just a big mouth too so it doesnt help.

I am nice with people that are nice, I respect people that respect me as well. But when you brush me the wrong way, you get my bad side  Unfortunately, trying to be the better person isn't always that easy. It's like keeping stuff inside and never vent it. It's bad for the karma.

An example of that is a new employee at my work. I was nice to her, always say hi, always take the occasion to show her new stuff. Now she thinks she knows everything even though she does a lot of mistakes, she refuses any help from people, she doesn't even say hi, she ignores us when we ask for help...etc Trying to be nice to that kind of people doesn't seem to do any good.

I know a lot more sarcastic Canadians than Americans. Generally speaking, Americans don't seem to get sarcasm, at least not the ones I work with :P

Oddly enough, I'm far more sarcastic than my wife, and I'm the USC and she's the Canadian.

Many people I've met have been taken aback by what I've said and then I've had to explain it to them (which, unfortunately, ruins it). My sense of humor is difficult to pick up on unless you know me, so maybe that's part of it. I tend to have a more dry and straight-faced sense of humor, which I have to admit, is unusual for Americans.

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

yeah, I got my hubby to watch an episode of Red Green and he totally didn't get it ...

I lived in Canada for 6 years and still don't get that dude

Hang in there sweetie you will, now take some of this change and buy yourself some gum, just kidding. *looks to see if his Sister is smiling* Red Green is funny for the average 12 year-old but is otherwise just amusing. I do like his duct tape projects though, sort of a poorman's answer to Rube Goldberg I suppose. I have seen some really crazy sh*t done with duct tape and I've done some of it myself. Sarcasm is frequently just a diaphanous pretext to be rude. Sardonic wit combined with a modicum of superciliousness is the finest expression of alimentary logic. Sophistry at its most condescending and hurtful, gotta luv it. There are plenty of sarcastic folks in the US but primarily on the East Coast. Out West there tends to be less of that classist mentality and clever witticisms are much less common, people in the Western US also frequently carry firearms which may have something to do with it.

In case you're wondering, I have no sense of humour, I'm really this much of an azzhole. :o

I believe each culture has it's own way to express itself such as sarcasm. In Canada, what striked me most (being from Europe) is the french-english battles, the ones not being able to laugh at themselves...which contributed to isolation and much more...very sad. Being new in the US now and in the 'honey moon' phase with this fascinating country my opinion can be too subjective...but still I can say that I find here people overralll having, either the talent to be very self critical or the talent to be happy, which is all like oxygen to me. Canada has not really have to battle for its independence as the US, still don't get me wrong, canadians are intelligent people and know as well the differences, with or without sarcasms..In the US, i feel this freedom wind in the texture, the bones of many...even if it's exagerated or not...either way i'm fascinated or like it....Thus and maybe because my multiple backgrounds, sarcasm for me if i'm tempted by this tendency, means i'm nostalgic by the loss of something in the past, etc...I can not be sacrastic here in the US....everything seems to me so much more structured and clear in a way or another...or at least as my hubby put it, can get fixed faster...i believe him...obviously...lol...so...bye bye for me sarcasm...for a while at least...

Well Spirit, I haven't had much of an opportunity to speak with American's - sarcastically or not - so I haven't formed an opinion on it. As for Canadians that I know, they can be quite the sarcastic lot and I appreciate it

As with most things it's all about the intent - sarcasm can be wry and dry and funny - if you are out to be hurtful - well people can call that whatever they want....I just call it mean.

I totally disagree and I don't think it is to do with independence.

It has to do with where you live I believe. People in New Jersey can rarely make fun of themselves. They are a very serious, agressive bunch. Therefore, that is why my husband doesn't feel many Canadian comics are funny. He doesn't understand why they make fun of themselves. There is a lack of tv shows as well in comparison to Canada when it comes to making fun of ones self. Canada has a bazillion. The US has...the colbert report.

Yup, The Colbert Report.

And it is so deviant, and so brilliant, that unless you have a mind like that, you will miss the irony, the "jokes".

There is another one (show) that is similar.

I forget.

I do not have a TV and have not lived with one for a loooooong time except for a few months when I first moved in with my sweetie.

Maybe my point is more about what sarcasm is/exists, and why people do it rather than a comparison of the two countries.

Although it is true, anyone who is a fan of CBC radio knows that there was so much of self-deprecating humour that its sheer genius writing (and delivery) was to be appreciated.

To laugh at oneself is a great thing.

My feeling about sarcasm is that people are being mean (lashing out) to avoid having to be real, vulnerable and loving.

Like you brought up Trailmix!

Sometimes it is so ingrained they are completely unconscious of it.

Imagine:

Open.

Inclusive.

Soft.

Wow!

What concepts!

Hahaha.

Oh and could someone please translate Mumsie's post for me, as looking all those words up on dictionary.com takes a long time.

Hee, hee.

I think you guys might like The Onion News Network. It constantly makes fun of the U.S. (and the world, in general) in an absolutely hilariously manner (that's so ridiculous, it's somehow non-insulting). That link brings you to their website, where they have tons of articles written online and many videos as well.

Originally, The Onion was simply a newspaper parody (actually created in newspaper format) and later collected in larger books, sold in stores like Barnes & Noble, Borders or on Amazon. There's very little reason to buy the hard copies today, since everything you could want is online and the books are often very large, which makes them impractical for traveling purposes.

There's also an "Onion Movie" which plays on the majority of their articles and videos, so if you're a die-hard Onion reader/watcher, the movie may not be too entertaining (my brother, who's been a fan since the early days said the movie held few surprises for him), but if it's all new for you, then I'm sure it'll be pretty funny. :)

One warning: Not everything on the website is necessarily "work-safe" (it all depends on what you're viewing) and some articles/videos might best be described as "politically incorrect."

Sheeeshe, how could I forget The Onion.

As far as sarcastic humour goes, they have it beat.

I loved the newspaper dedicated to the environment and global warming....a month ago??

That was awesome.
