Sarcasm

Hello All You Wonder-Full VJers,

So here I am visiting "home" (Vancouver) and many conversations arise about all kinds of juicy things.

For example, just one of them:

What is the deal with all the sarcasm?

It seems that USians relish in that way of being (yes yes I am speaking generally)...could it be a defense mechanism?

(It seems Canadians are less sarcastic...or maybe it is the friends I have chosen that are so terrific, hee hee.)

Think about it.

Try it and see how it feels in your body.

I do not handle sarcasm well, and when I find myself responding in sarcasm I feel sick to my stomach.

Nope, not me at all...and so, having cleared up one aspect of living in a huge noisy city (Chicago), I need to remember that I do not need to engage in anything unhealthy.

Hence upon my return I will be acutely aware of any and all sarcasm and any and all negative energies...

...and pour love all over it!

I have buckets of the stuff!

(L) (L) (F)(L) (L)

Ah, me and my morning musings...

I was actually thinking that CDNS used sarcasm a little more perhaps? Perhaps it's more dry humour that i'm thinking of though.. :)

I just know when I make a joke (sometimes including sarcasm) people never get it :P (not mean sarcasm - but just light hearted sarcasm :) tee hee)

Hope you have a terrific time in VAN!! :)

My husband does not get most Canadian comics. I will be laughing up a storm and he is like..I don't get it. I think it has to do with the dry humour. Canadians have more of a sense of British humour than American humour.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I think generally speaking American's laugh at other people better than they laugh at themselves. . most CDN humour that I find hilarious usually includes making fun of something about CDNS :) tee hee.

That makes sense, actually. Look at the general position of the United States and Canada. Americans (and I'm including myself in this) tend to believe we're the "king of the hill" (and in many walks of life, we are; we're just not in all areas), so much of our humor centers around making fun of others we consider to be "lesser than us." Canada, on the other hand, often gets made fun of, so if nothing else, Canadians have developed a thick skin and learned to laugh at themselves.

Having said that, Americans can laugh at themselves, but often believe it's "only okay to do so" if another American does it. In addition, I actually do like British humor -- I'm a huge Monty Python fan. My sense of humor is a bit warped too, so I'm not sure if it's characteristic of the "average American." :P

Hahaha, ah yes, the RedGreen show was not for your average sense of humour.

All that duct tape stuff killed me...especially when he figured out a way to make a platform to raise in front of his garage so he never needed to shovel snow.

nothing ever really worked though. Haha!

And yes Canadians love to make fun of themselves...see Rick Mercer on any of his political rants.

Terrific stuff.

Most Canadian humour is so incestuous that if you were not raised here, it would be very challenging to follow along.

I was meaning to talk more about day to day conversations, not so much about comedians, etc.

What I am proposing is we all get really present to how he speak and how we are spoken to.

You know what I mean jelly beans?

And that way, by doing a small thing such as curbing sarcasm it will pave the way to more conscious and loving behaviour.

And who on this whacky planet cannot use more of that?!

Thanks for responding every one.

I agree with you! When I was in Canada visiting Dennis and his family I heard a lot of sarcasm and very dry wit. Which was good with me, but a lot of people here at home just look at me funny when I make a joke and then I have to explain it. It's much funnier when I don't have to explain it. ;) It was also really entertaining when I was in Canada and someone would make a joke, watch me out of the corner of their eye to see if I'd get it, then be speechless for a minute when I responded in kind. Gotta love stereotypes.

The only sarcasm I seem to have come into contact with so far living here has been in my own house. I look at the source and then turn around and feed back to them some gentle loving suggestions. So far, it's not been too bad. I only hope that it stays that way.

Canadians have a better sense of humour IMHO, and I totally ' get them ' .

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

It seems a lot of time it goes over the heads of many of my American friends, if ya know what I mean.
