How are you "punished" for it?

Whenever the race card is played. I have personally seen it used more times in my 3 years here than during my entire life in Australia.

I recently saw it at work where a guy got a promotion over a girl simply because the manager was black and the girl was white. The guy she promoted would have been fired yesterday in any other company I worked in. Yes this is just another one of those incidents #6 you class as being "isolated".

How do you know 100% for sure that the promotion was the result of racial discrimination?

Because everyone in the team knew him as the slacker. The manager has always been bum chums with him while hard on others.

That doesn't mean it was racially motivated... I mean... it isn't unheard of for people in management positions to promote their friends.

yea with us they promoted this guy who didn't evne finish college and certainly doesnt have as much experience as the other guys that work with me, he got promoted cuz he is BFF with upper management.. and he was white, oh noes, they picked him over the latino, the black and the woman who work there..

Happened to my wife too. They promoted a brown-noser who had only been working there for 3 months.

All jealousy aside, what would be the premise behind a "white history month"? Do inform me.

It is called the United States of America. The country has a lot of great achievements and accomplishments to talk about. Thousands actually.

Even though people want to paint it as the root of evil, the good actually outweighs the bad.

What was the last vaccine, technology or medical breakthrough to come out of Greece?

Black History Month is a celebration of an accomplishment, of the United States of America.

We're just too busy being racist and defensive to actually consider that. :)

Racist about what?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I've said this to you many times before - on the half a hundred threads that have been started about this. White "heritage" has more to do with nationality than ethnicity - being of French/Irish/German/Italian/British descent being more important than being "white".

What is your point? No one here actually celebrates being white. Whereas there are lots of other ethnicities in America who do celebrate skin color / race.

The million dollar question is why is the average Americans who happens to be Caucasian cannot celebrate their own heritage, history and culture without basically being branded as a plantation owning racist.

What sort of repression have whites undergone in this country? And please, stick to this country.

So why should I be punished and made to feel guilty for it? Because I am white right...

Even though I was never here when it happened and that includes segregation.

You're the only one making yourself feel guilty, or jealous, or whatever it is.

I'm white and sure as hell don't feel guilty for anything. Or jealous. Let people have their pride. What does it hurt you?

That is not the question or the point.

If Caucasians got together and had their own white history month etc then there would be people who would claim this event is racist. That is the reality in America.

dude.. celebrating being white is not the same as the other culture celebrations.. latino month is not because we're brown and dance salsa.. it's celebrating the cultures of each region and whatnot..celebrating whiteness is not the same as celebrating irish heritage month, or german-heritage or whatever european culture arrived to america and are proud of it..

dude has a point there.

celebrating being a red neck white american isn't something I'd particularly be proud to celebrate.

But white americans celebrating new years eve, valentines, 4th of july, halloween, christmas is kinda unique to us in how our culture does it compared to these other heritage groups. We don't exactally have our own song and dance but we do have our own folklore, granted it's not as old as say some countries folklore, but we have the wild west tales & the patriotic stories of the founding fathers.

white americans have a lot to celebrate for.. but again, there's not just 1 kind of white.. there's lots of heritages to celebrate.. germans, irish, scotish, polish, etc etc etc.. certainly the south, despite all its stereotypes has a great culture to be proud of

Yes I guess white America is a culmination of all those heritages but put that out to the 4th generation American and how many of them actually celebrate their great great grandparents heritage anymore? The majority of white America is something all together different now compared to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation of other ethnic heritages still celebrating their ancestors. I'm not saying its a good thing or a bad thing. Also even in other countries different regions of their own country have their own accents in the same language and own mannerism just as we have here in the US so on that I can agree with you.

True, take a look at the magazines in circulation==== Essence, the magazine for black women! that is proudly stated on the front of the mag, Latina Woman, is another one, i have never seen a magazine that proudly states "for the white woman" on the front page!! Why? because that would be considered racist and there would an public uproar!

Racist about what?

I dunno.

"White History Month"

You tell me. This is about race to you.

No this is about equality. If American is truly working towards being equal then race should no longer be an issue. This can never happen when race and history is always brought into the equation.

No one should be made to feel guilty about the past and so forth.

Exactly. Why do people fail to comprehend this..

I have never seen a Greek/Italian or Asian Essence in Australia. There would be a magazine for women as a whole, rather than focusing on one race.

Just look at groups like LA Raza - A group in America for the advancement of Mexicans. Never heard of an equivalent group in Australia.

The only two groups who tend to differentiate themselves in America I find are black and Latino Americas. Everyone else considers themselves to be American and possible of x heritage.

That is the first I have heard of that magazine. Whereas I have seen about 10 different black / latino magazines on our store shelves.

PS A.J, the Italians I have come across do not dwell on their heritage as much as other people. As Indians don't.

I would agree with you except for that not all blacks and not all latinos do that, just like not all whites are part of the neo-nazi skinhead groups. And not all blacks and latino prides are as extreme or as long standing as the neo-nazi white supremacy groups in the US. The black groups that where comparable where some of the black panther groups of the 60's and 70's but now it's not as big as or severe as back then. The newer generation of blacks that perpetuate this similar intensity would be young males in the poorer urban regions that may be gang related. The latino groups that are comparable to severity and intensity are also of this demographic but either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation immigrant.

I live next to a primarily Italian-American town, where I always go to buy my pizza. So I see it all the time.

Same reason I also see Indian-American and Muslim-American magazines.. because of other stores I go to for Indian food and kababs, respectively.

Doesn't that go without saying that each culture celebrates within some sort of tradition? I don't understand what NY's eve, Valentine's, Halloween, or Christmas have to do with talking in the context of celebrating 'whiteness'.
