Thank goodness most of these fools don't actually have the nuts to do the stuff they espouse. It's more for shock value and to get a rise out of other people. I look at the racists of other races in the same vein. They can say what they want as long as they don't cross the line and carry out the ####### they espouse.

Blacks, Mexicans, Cherokee, or whatever are more than welcome to have whatever celebrations they want. Just don't scream racism if a white (ie: Irish, British, French, et al) group wants to do the same.

Can you or someone else post a link to an article or something supports this notion that people are screaming 'racists' at St. Patrick's Day Parades or other similar celebrations because I don't hear or see people doing that. If they are doing that...they're being stupid. One thing I love about living in this metropolitan area is you can go to Little Tokyo, Korean Town, China Town, Little Saigon, so many ethnic enclaves where you can find great food and people holding on to some of their rich cultural identity. I remember one restaurant a few years ago in Little Saigon got a lot of flack because the owner had a picture of Ho Chi Minh up on the wall. People were threatening to beat him up over it.

It seems the issue here is pointing out people's intolerance towards others who are different from them. Celebrating one's ethnicity or having pride in one's culture is different from having pride in generic classification that really has no meaning beyond physical characteristics.

In a raucous meeting, San Jose officials on Wednesday agreed to allow 18 temporary banners on Story Road to mark "Little Saigon" - the latest chapter in a controversy that has gripped City Hall and could threaten the career of Councilwoman Madison Nguyen.

City Planning Director Joe Horwedel made the tentative ruling, then shortly afterward halted the meeting when chaos erupted among the nearly 100 people in the audience.

Several dozen Little Saigon activists who disagreed on the location of the banners walked out of the City Council chambers, shouting "Recall Chuck Reed," and "Recall Madison," after an audience member was not permitted to speak because the designated public comment period had already ended.

A city staffer ran out of the room to ask security for help with crowd control, but no further incidents broke out.

Mayor Reed and Nguyen, the first Vietnamese-American elected to the council, have drawn the ire of activists since controversy arose last year over what to name a Story Road retail area. A recall effort already is under way against Nguyen, who opposed naming the area "Little Saigon."

The city eventually decided not to choose a formal name but to allow private banners welcoming visitors to "Little Saigon." Wednesday's administrative hearing centered on a disagreement between city staffers and activists over the location and number of banners.

Story Road, but the city said only 18 should hang clustered at two locations near the corner of Story and McLaughlin Ave. Horwedel will make a final ruling later in the week.

The so-called "Community Identification Signs" would be temporary, hanging for up to three years until the city formally adopts new rules for the installation of banners in retail districts.

Speakers urged them not to put such strict limits on the placement of banners.

"They should not be concentrated on McLaughlin and Story Road only," said resident Minh Khan Pham. "You are making history for the city of San Jose, so do it right."

The Little Saigon proponents were hoping to see banners up and down the busy thoroughfare, like the banners that hang in Japantown. Horwedel, however, explained that the rules are different because Japantown, unlike Little Saigon, is a designated business district.

Horwedel later appeared to lose control of the meeting after he allowed a member of the audience and vocal Little Saigon supporter, Patrick Phu Le, to serve as official English-to-Vietnamese translator.

Horwedel made the switch because the city employee charged with doing the translation was getting booed by audience members, who questioned his translating abilities.

"That did make it harder for the meeting to continue," Horwedel said. He said he wasn't surprised by the tenor of Wednesday's gathering, given the amount of public interest. He said he wrapped up the meeting when he did because he had already touched on most of his key points.

"It's an emotional issue for a lot of the people in the community," he said.

You either have bad luck or a knack for pissing people off.

Not to say that I myself haven't run across blacks that obviously have a racial hatred of whites, but it's not the way I view the whole world.

Oh it certainly does - but what's being requested/demanded here is some sort of retaliatory politically correct festival because some angry people resent the existence of a Black History Month
