White American (proud to be...)

I've said this to you many times before - on the half a hundred threads that have been started about this. White "heritage" has more to do with nationality than ethnicity - being of French/Irish/German/Italian/British descent being more important than being "white".

What is your point? No one here actually celebrates being white. Whereas there are lots of other ethnicities in America who do celebrate skin color / race.

The million dollar question is why is the average Americans who happens to be Caucasian cannot celebrate their own heritage, history and culture without basically being branded as a plantation owning racist.

What sort of repression have whites undergone in this country? And please, stick to this country.

So why should I be punished and made to feel guilty for it? Because I am white right...

Even though I was never here when it happened and that includes segregation.

You're the only one making yourself feel guilty, or jealous, or whatever it is.

I'm white and sure as hell don't feel guilty for anything. Or jealous. Let people have their pride. What does it hurt you?

That is not the question or the point.

If Caucasians got together and had their own white history month etc then there would be people who would claim this event is racist. That is the reality in America.

You are so right! Why can't we have a St Patty's day or an Italian American day or a San Genaro festival. Why can't we celebrate the holidays of predominantly white groups like Hannukah or Christmas? Would it be too much to ask to get a day off on Christmas? Why can't us white people celebrate the rich culture of our Irish, Italian, Norse, etc heritage while every other day is African American day? You know what I think? I think the Irish should have a darn parade down 5th avenue every St Patty's day for all that we've contributed to America! Do you think you'll ever see that?! No way! Day after day after day it's the African American parade, African American parade. Hear music in NY? Must be another African American parade. Why do the African Americans get to march down 5th ave every other day when you can't hardly find a St Patty's day celebration anywhere!

The fact that all these celebrations of white people's countries of origen are outlawed in the US is ample proof of this point. White people never get to celebrate their heritage, while on Kwanzaa every darn store in town closes. parades everywhere, can't find a parking spot. I am so fed up with this!

I'm starting a petition for the Irish to get that parade in NY. Anybody want to sign?

What's that? Oh, really? Oh excuse me, I have to go now.

Christmas is not a "white group's" holiday. It is a religious holy day of Christians, who can be of any ethnicity.

Then you'd say, "I'm proud to be Irish", but 'white' doesn't imply any specific ethnic characteristics beyond color of skin. Can you think of anything unique to being 'white' by which you'd be proud of?

Same could go for "black".

It's just a skin colour.

As for Americans.... do you really think we're going to say "I'm proud to be English-Irish-Norwegian-German-French-Swedish!" No, those all get covered by "white" and "American".

Black Pride as I understand it was a movement against the oppression that black people have experienced because of their skin color, much like Gay Pride. But things like St. Patrick's Day Parades or Greek Festivals are celebrations of culture and ethnicity.

Don't forget the Moors who conquered Spain in the 8th Century... many Europeans are not anymore 'white' than they are 'black'.

The Black Irish like Jabberwocky said are from the Moors. One of my friends who is a white female and 6'3' with freckles claims to be from the black irish decendency and she proudly wears her "Kiss Me I'm Irish" shirt every St. Patty's Day.

How can someone be proud of a label that has no nationality or ethnic origin?

dunno. but, if your talking about being proud of being white...white people would be european in origin.

can you explain why black pride & latino pride are okay & not white pride?...not white supremacy white pride.

Actually... if you read the thread in its entirety

you know i'm not going to do that. it hurts my head. so just gimme the answer.

I do? Silly me I guess.

Still if you wait 6 months you can start a new thread on this subject and pretend that noone else said anything. That's pretty much what seems to happen with this topic.

ok will do

Perhaps we could spearhead a movement to replace "proud" with "pleased to be associated with." A bit clunky, but it would make for a nice long bumper sticker.

I am pleased to be associated with Big A and Joyce in the Cool Whip circles

Likewise!

How are you "punished" for it?

Whenever the race card is played. I have personally seen it used more times in my 3 years here than during my entire life in Australia.

I recently saw it at work where a guy got a promotion over a girl simply because the manager was black and the girl was white. The guy she promoted would have been fired yesterday in any other company I worked in. Yes this is just another one of those incidents #6 you class as being "isolated".

How do you know 100% for sure that the promotion was the result of racial discrimination?

Because everyone in the team knew him as the slacker. The manager has always been bum chums with him while hard on others.

And even though we know how inaccurate people's "perceptions" turn out to be don't mean they ain't true when you are talking about those with more melanin then thyself! You go white man!

Rumors about dark people started by people who fantasize themselves oppressed by dark people are always going to be great data on which to base an argument! I don't care what anybody says. Woohoo!

I'm irrationally proud to be 1/8 Lithuanian, but I'm deeply ashamed of the rest of my ethnicity.

I am, however, justifiably proud of my booty.

What is there to be irrationally proud about being Lithuanian? What are the others...and why are you ashamed of them? Enquiring minds wanna know.

BTW my mom's people are from next door in Belarus (aka: Byelorussia).

Well, the Lithuanians are known for their excellent fashion sense.

As for deeply ashamed, well, I come from a long line of useless drunks on the Irish side, and a buncha cheap-a$$ Russians, Austro-Hungarians, and Ukranians on the other side--all terrible cooks. :P

Plus, I was brought up Catholic and have a Jewish mother. She'd go have coffee while we went to church. Hence, I wanted to be Jewish until I attended my first Seder and saw gefiltefish. All very confusing!

Could someone pass the Cool Whip?

Because of the Mc part of their names?

I always questioned her claim myself but she comes back with her last name is Black and that is also where it came from. :shrugs:

Olivia, you should challenge her to a beer-off. If she's really Irish you'll know. Unless you're Irish too, of course.

I need to decrease my alcohol consumption, according to the Dr. I'm prehypertension. So no more beer offs for me. :(

But that girl can drink ya under that table any day. We'd been doing it since we were 15 illegally downtown 6th St. in Austin, TX. I can't tell you how many 21 birthdays we celebrated in a row until we reached 21 and past.
