Oh, nothing interesting. Wife is coming back in 2 weeks so making sure everythings back the way it was when she left.

Does it look like this at the moment (first 44 seconds)?

My wife just called, Air India canceled her first connecting flight. Things are a bit of a mess at the moment.

I dislike being white, I need more tan!

Sorry, Amber, you can tan yourself to a crisp, but you'll still be White....just say it, "I'm White, and I apologize." ;)

Basically being proud of something you have not control over does not seem attractive to me and actually dangerous.

Here is the list of what makes me proud : Struggling for three years to get a Degree, making my family smiles , supporting my family, being an integral part of my neighbourhood (south yorkshire /Sheffield) , being able to dance , being self employed ,etc...

By the way I am mixed (afro-polynesian) and there are a lot of people who achieved great things and happen to be of the same racial background as yours i.e nothing wrong with being a white ,Although just a few centuries ago some people were so proud of being white that they actually believed the rest of the world were inferior to them (i.e. racism)

The first thing to pop up in my head every morning isn't, "Gee, I'm white and proud..sing it loud."

I am what I am and I certainly don't hate myself for it.

Humans are tribal, but a lot of people don't want to acknowledge that fact.

Acknowledging it and choosing to continue silly tribal behaviors are two very different things. Our genetic ancestry probably also indicates that our females prefer to mate with multiple males. Acknowledge and continue OK with you or is that something you'd rather acknowledge and leave in the past? We do have this little thing called "civilization" (maybe you've heard of it?) where we have intentionally left some of our tribal behavior behind for the greater good.

It isn't uncommon to find people confused between acknowledging and continuing but if you look them up in a dictionary I think you will see they are different. Every 4 years presidential candidates are happy to take advantage of continuing tribal behavior to manipulate us into voting for morons. Acknowledge and continue?

You are certainly correct to note that we all have a pre-wired tendency to separate tribe and non-tribe in our head and to ascribe perfection and all that is good to our tribe and evil and all that is bad to the others. This is responsible for much of the grief that the world endures. I'd prefer not to use our wiring as an excuse for continuing irrational, destructive behavior but to each his own I suppose.

What is it about the pigment content of your skin that you all find so pride inducing? Do you feel shame when you get a tan? Do you gasp in horror at freckles? Little islands of non-pride in your prideful universe? If you're proud to be a redneck, wouldn't that make one a partially red American? What about Albinos? They part of our tribe or not? What about people with vitiligo who gradually lose their skin pigment? If they start out as Black Americans do they at some point qualify on this pride scale as full fledged white Americans?

Ah, but so much easier to feel proud for no apparent reason than to think! By the way, I'm a white American but I can't imagine why, of all the things I am and have accomplished that I would pick the pigment content of my skin to be proud of. I guess maybe if I had nothing else to be proud of, I might resort to something as silly as that but then I'm not sure I'd want to tell everyone that in public.

Mm, having white skin I am at increased risk of skin cancer. I sometimes burn and I don't tan evenly. The paleness of my skin shows up any spots, markings, bad veins or cellulite more easily than most. I don't particularly wish to use fake tan and neither do I want to tan naturally as I'd rather not end up with prematurely-aged wrinkly skin. I'm just going to have to remember to slather on sunblock and stay away from the midday sun.

I was just going to ask why were the "Dark Ages" considered so "dark" :)

Well you aren't - obviously. But we've all benefitted in some way from the policies of the past - and I don't think its really any coincidence that blacks tend to occupy the lowest levels of the socio-economic ladder. There is a chain of cause and effect here - related to the racist policies of the past.

Some blacks are on the "lowest levels of the socioeconomic ladder," certainly. I think it's fair to say that the majority of players in the NBA and NFL are comprised of African Americans. Granted, not everyone becomes a star athlete (it's extremely difficult to do), but with the possible exception of the NHL and MLB, blacks make up a huge section -- and in some cases, the vast majority -- of players in sports.

There are also lots of blacks in other entertainment fields, such as music and film. If successful, there's millions upon millions to make there. Somehow I don't think Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and Will Smith are complaining.

Are some areas of life unfair to African Americans? Of course. Life is inherently unfair to everyone and depending on the circumstances involved, it may seem like it's worse for you (or your group). As I've stated, I'm Jewish. Although I can "blend in" with others, there are still tons of anti-Semites in the world and the U.S., many of which would love to see me at a disadvantage.

To them I say, "Screw off." Whatever they want, they're not going to get it. While it'd certainly be easier if everything I ever needed or wanted was handed to me, I don't expect that -- and it shouldn't occur, either. I'm not better or worse than anyone else. I work for what I want.

As someone else has already said, I don't see the need to be "proud" of something I didn't accomplish. That doesn't mean I'm ashamed of it, either. However, I had no say in being "white" (or Jewish and American as well) and it seems to be that in order to be "proud" of something, someone needs to have achieved some sort of success. Well... I was born. I didn't get a vote in that, now did I? I'm sure my wife is happy my birth occurred, but no one polled me beforehand.

The same, I believe, is true for those of other races, religions and nationalities. What are you so proud of? I'm sure there have been people from your culture that have done wondrous things, but are you one of them? If not, take a step back and stop trying to ride those coattails. Just because a black man (Otis Boykin) invented the pacemaker doesn't mean African Americans today get to take credit for it; likewise, I can't assume responsibility for the work of Albert Einstein or Thomas Edison (simply because they're white and the former is Jewish).

You totally stole that from George Carlin.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't intentionally "steal" it. As a fan of Carlin, I probably had his routine stuck in my brain somewhere when I wrote that, so I'm sure it heavily influenced me. :P

This discussion has been done to death on here before - but you can see through publicly available statistics (the US census for example) that if you're black you are significantly a lot more likely to experience poverty than you are if you're white. I get that there are individual exceptions in fields likes sports and the media but that isn't the point - given that most people simply don't become movie stars or pro-sports players.

It is true to say that there are massive economic disparities between blacks and whites and none of this can be entirely separated from the position that those people occupied in our society under previous governments. So I say again - you may not be to blame for the repressive policies of the past, but its difficult to say that we haven't benefitted from them in some way or other...

I mean do you think that Britain of France's position on the world stage was one that was arrived at by accident? Or was that due to centuries worth of colonialism and empire building (at the expense of say, people in Africa?)
