Teenager Georgia Davis weighs 462 pounds, has type 2 diabetes and can barely walk.

At 5 feet 6 inches tall, the 15-year-old said she eats more than 13,000 calories a day.

In September, Georgia will fly to North Carolina to enroll in Wellspring Academy, a school that specializes in fitness and weight loss. Doctors say if she does not lose weight, she will die.

“It’s like a drug," Davis said. "Some people choose heroin but I’ve chosen food and it’s killing me.”

Davis was encouraged to try the program in North Carolina because her doctors believe she is too young for weight-loss medication or gastric bypass surgery.

Davis said she turned to food for comfort after her father died from emphysema.

In an average day, she eats several processed ready-made meals, several sandwiches, peanuts, sausages, chips, chocolate and chunks of cheese — washed down with bottles of Coke or milk.

“I can’t even walk more than a few steps without getting out of breath and a few months ago I developed type 2 diabetes," she said. "When I look in the mirror, I feel sad and go to my bedroom and cry."

Ouch, my tummy hurts from looking at all that. And to be honest, it doesn't look that appetizing. One loaf of bread? yuck... give me chinese, or burgers, or breaded shrimp, but bread? Nah, not worth me getting fat over.

There has to be some thing people can do for people like this. The psyche is messed up completely if food is the only pleasure, to the point of slow suicide. Messed up and terrible.

The father died, clearly there is a need for some kind of interention. Yes, the mother needs to play a part in the rehab and it shouldn't have got to this stage, but who knows what the psyche of the mother is like too?

I'd venture to guess the mother doesn't practice good nutrition and health herself.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I disagree that there has to be something that people can do for people morbidly obese. At the end of the day, regardless of cause, this girl has eaten herself to the point of death. We are struggling to treat a myriad of illness and disease that is not self inflicted, and these should take priority. This girl has simply to eat less to reduce her weight and reduce all the symptoms associated with it. Instead of doing this, she chooses to continue to eat 13000 calories per day.

This could have prevented - whoever is the adult/enabler responsible for this. If she cannot walk more than few steps, can you imagine her going grocery shopping?

Yes, but why? However, sure, throw the book at them, that'll help everyone.

We take away children from other types of abusive parents. Child neglect is the most prevalent form of abuse. Taking her away from her mother until her mother can actually take of the child is putting the child's best interest first, IMO.

My goodness, 13,000 caliories and most of them are empty calories, not a single fruit in that picture, and not one veggie that hasn't been doused in oil....even if she at half of that stuff, it would be waaay too much.

I hope they can find a way to help her cope with the uderlying reasons for her excessive eating. Comfort eating is a hard one to kick - trust me. I hope she gets help.

Don't turn into yet another one of the 'judge people without knowing all the facts' posters. There area already enough of those. :bonk:

My bet is that this family are finacially insecure, that the mother probably has psychological issues as well as the daughter and that they can't afford to go and get treated. We accept alcoholics, bulimics, drug adicts and the like as ill, while the morbidly obese are simply labelled as weak willed or lazy.

The family needs to be treated as a unit in my opinion, but money and programs to treat families together doesn't appear to be forthcoming so some members of society are left to suck it up and bear the brunt of the ugly side of people's intollerance.
