SSN must be w/EAD to get state ID?

i went to the DMV office here in rhode island to apply for a state ID and was told by the processing person that since my SSN shows "valid for work only with DHS authorization" that i should wait for my EAD approval before i can apply for the state ID. is this true and correct? i said even if i dont intend to work i have to wait for it? she said yes and i went home, hehe

help and thanks in advance!

Here in Texas they won't give me a DL until I get my GC. I'm currently filing for AOS and should go back there once I get any sort of document proving my legal status of residence. Go figure. B)

Hi when i tried getting a state ID in the DMV here in santa ana, CA, they wanted to see an appoved notice from USCIS. So i'll just wait for my EAD card and then go back in there. best of luck to us

Oct 14, 2008---EAD1 CARD ARRIVES! Approval date is Oct. 2, 2008

Dec 10, 2008---INTERVIEW DAY! APPROVED!!!

Dec 17, 2008---WELCOME NOTICE RECEIVED

Jan 9, 2009---CARD RECEIVED FINALLY! Approval date 12-10-08..expires on 12-10-10

REMOVAL OF CONDITIONS

Sept 10,2010---REMOVAL OF CONDITIONS

When you get your greencard you can go to SSA and get the with DHS only removed, my wife did after she recieved her greencard

When Natasha went to get her state ID (our AOS is pending and we haven't received anything like EAD or AP yet) all they wanted to see was our marriage license (certified copy) and her social security card, which was stamped with the 'not valid for work' thing.

Each state is different. Virginia requires merely the original NOA showing that one's application for an EAD/GC has been accepted and is being processed.
