Hi, how do you get a SSN after you have your K3 visa? The guide says you have to have a approved EAD before they will grant you a SSN? That could take months! How do I get my spouse health insurance in the US till then without a SSN? Please advise if you have already gone through this. Thanks

SSN is not a requirement to be added to medical insurance.

Again K-3 is not work auth so SSA will not issue one.

One of the reasons I keep telling people to consider NOT filing for K-3 and just do the CR-1 is the SSN problem, you can always hold on using the K-3 and interview for CR-1 if it looks like NVC is sending the I-130 to consulate, your timeline shows paying the NVC fees.

You need to get married, and bring your marriage certificate and your fiance's visa to the SS office. you can get the SS card before you marry when she arrives on her visa, then later get the last named changed

THEY are K-3 NOT K-1, so are already married, and K-3 cannot get SSN until they have EAD card, or green-card.

We just went this week to apply for our SSN. We are also a K3. As it says in the guide on Visa Journey - you do need to have your EAD to get the SSN. We applied for our EAD at beginning of May and he received his work permission on July 25. We needed the card and the I-94 when we went to apply at the Social Security Office. I was able to get health insurance for my husband and didn't need social security number. I think they put 999-99-9999 until he gets a real number. It was the same for me when I added him to my bank accounts, etc.

Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks.

Probably not but it does take a little time for the SSA's records to get updated. They won't issue the SSN until they see you in their database whether you have the EAD card or not.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Another K-3 SS card question:

My DIL has a SSN from when she was here on a J-1 visa, but threw the card away because she didn't think she would ever have any use for it again! We managed to retrieve the number and entered it on both her I-129F and I-130 petitions. Can her card be replaced when she gets here prior to her getting her EAD? It would certainly make life easier as far as getting a DL, etc.

If she already has a SSN then yes, she should just be able to get a replacement card when she arrives. She'll just fill out the lost card form or whatever its called.
