And vice-versa...my fiance loves hearing my accent when I speak Turkish. Sometimes he'll ask me to say something again because he wants to hear my accent and I get shy and say nooo! Accents are endearing

Yes, my wife also cannot say the "th" sound. And many of the other things said here with the latin speakers. She also has a habit of pronouncing the silent "e" at the end of words.

I crack up everytime she tries to say "unbelievable". --unbelebabal

She only says it to crack me up. But then again, she laughs at me when I say "afuera"(outside). There are many sounds I can't get right in spanish.

But I am the same as SKTEAMO, I hope it doesn't change that much.

Uhmmm, I was reading this post and I asked to my husband (he is the US citizen) what means "crack up", so he read this post and asked me to say "unbelievable"...right now he is "cracking up" as well...

I decided to start this thread for us, which have english as a second language, to share words we can't pronounce, difficulties, etc.

I know there were tons of threads like this, but it won't hurt to have a new one.

I'll start:

One of my main problems is certain words that are similar, but pronounced slightly different, such as:

- beach and b!tch - I can pronounce only sounding like b!tch

- sheet and sh!t - I can only pronounce sh!t

- sheep and ship - I can pronounce only like ship

- math and meth - I can pronounce meth

(did u guys notice a pattern there? I can pronounce the words I'm not supposed to be using, the bad words usually )

Second problem is words that have a syllable that we don't have anything simliar in our latin language:

- TH in the end of the sentences - that's very complicated cuz our latin language we don't have the th. So every time I have to say things like Aug 13th, I just say 13 of August, cuz the 13th just sucks bad

oops this makes no sense "It's not twenty-two thousand, it's twenty-two hundred." what i meant is $2200 = twenty two hundred to him because thousand is too difficult to say. its still cute.

He also mixes up here and there. Says one when he should say the other. He adds "the" to places when he shouldn't. "Yesterday, my friend and I had lunch at the Mc Donalds." "Do you want to go shopping at the Bloomingdales?" "When should we pick up our prescription at the Walgreens?" I've just broken him out of saying "mails" for "email". "I need to check my mails" instead of "I need to check my email." I'm working on ridding "infos" from his vocabulary. "I'll gather the infos" instead of "I'll gather the info." I'm sure that his english will improve once he lives here (here not there -- but he'd say there). His english is waaaaaaaaaaaay better than my french. I love his english though. He wants me to correct him but I don't want him to lose his french accent.

My husband is very bad about mixing up "he" and "she"

Also he does not always say his p sounds correctlly. And the way he says some words is funny/cute because he says beeeekle for pickle:) And he says cumbercue instead of cucumber:) (I get him to repeat that one all the time when he says it...I'll be sad when he does not say cumbercue anymore;)

And one big thing I noticed is that he has problems with compound words that aer unfamiliar to him. He will get them backwards. For ex: a sidewalk for him is a walkside.

I guess there's no short 'i' in Bisaya, so Jinky will instead make it a long 'e' sound.

She also pronounces Calcium as Cal-shum.

About the hardest part for me is following who she is talking about because she often uses 'he' for 'she', totally confusing me. I think in Bisaya, they don't have a masculine or feminine pronoun for 'she' or 'he.' We have a friend who immigrated from the Philippines almost 20 years ago - a nurse...and she does the same thing.

There's some pretty good software programs that can help with pronunciation. IMO, I think it is important to try and pronunciate as accurately as possible to avoid people from misunderstanding what's being said.

When I started handling money at this job I have now, I used to say money instead of cash, cuz in portuguese, the translation of money covers both.

I've never dealt money in Brazil, cuz I've always had jobs where i'd be in an office without clients contact. But if they came to me asking how can i pay, I'd say money, check or CC (in portuguese)

Another thing I said yesterday when I woman gave me cash and I didn't have change, I said do you have change instead of saying do you have the exact amount.

So it's interesting how we keep learning on a daily basis.
