Hi everyone,

I am so new to this whole K-1 Visa.

-As far as proof that I can support him, is there a specific amount or bracket I must fall into?

-I realize this is going to cost money, but how much should I expect? No attorney, just us filing and doing all the work to bring him to California from Jamaica.

The info on this site makes the process much easier than I expected. So thankful for that. Thanks in advance for any answers or suggestions you have.

Here are the poverty guidelines to 2008

Initial petition is $455.. then there's medical (varies..usually a couple hundred but can really vary)... visa fee ($131 usd)... adjustment of status (after you are married) $1010... that's for now. ;)

Read the K1 Guide and go right down the checklist. ;)

good luck!

read through the guides, theyre really helpful!

other than the already mentioned fees, you will also have expenses such as copying evidence, printing forms, mailing costs, passport pics, eventually international drivers license, any translations you might need for the visa process or for attending school/university in the states, traveling to the civil surgeon and back, traveling to the embassy and back..... and not to forget the ticket to get here........

Gah, $1010 for AOS? I had no idea..of course by the time we need to file one for my fiance the fees will probably have increased. Well...better to know ahead of time I suppose.

Hy Mrsladyd;

Welcome. Come on over to the yardie thread. I finished the process last month and I'm married now, so things are still fresh in my head. Yes, this is going to cost money and time and a lot of PATIENCE...but we're here to support each other along the way. Initially the filing fee is $455, but that's just the start of it. Your SO will need to come up with documentation from Jamaica and that's going to cost $$$$$$.

As the USC you must provide documents proving that your alien fiance will not become a public charge to the US. This means that you must earn 125% of poverty level to prove you can support your fiance. If you do not, then you find someone (usc) to co-sponsor your fiance with you.

At the Embassy stage of the process you will have to send a notorized I-134 and supporting documents to your fiance.

At AOS stage you will do the same with I-864.

It's all in the guides and faq's links at the top

I think the qualifying about is higher if you have children living with you in the household. I had to show that I could support 3 people. Me, myself and my son.

Not sure what the connection is between the poverty guidelines and the visa are. Can you tell me how to interpret and make the connection between the 2?

The connection is related to the question you first asked; how much money is required for you to be able to prove you can support your fiance.

Read the guides, everything will be explained there. Then if you have questions after reading the guides, we'll all be happy to assist you.

Good luck!

Hey Mrsladyd, welcome to visa journey. Like Lawny said, come on over to the Yardie thread in the regional forum and you will find tons of people that have gone or are going through the K-1 visa process. Lawny just finished last month and she is great with advice. A couple more are almost at the interview stage and they have gotten great advice and guidance there. Not saying the people who have responded to you so far have not given you good advice, but the yardie thread is specific to Jamaica and all consulates and countries does things diferently and has different requirements.

Good luck with this process and like Lawny said you have to be prepared to exercise tons of patience as you take this journey to being with your loved one.
