Did I say I was a doctor..NO! You cant tell me she isnt insane. Depression is one thing but to chase your kids down and drown them 1 by 1 constitutes being insane to me.

true...the term insane appears no where is diagnosis standards..but is a legal term used for deluisonal psychosis mainly..some states do not accept this as a defense for a crime...and the proof is on the defendant....i worked with allot of gmi in kansas..guilty but mentally insane ....they were usually have psychosis as ther diagnosis...

That's the point though isn't it - you can diagnose a medical condition (based on a real, observable and physical ailment) that causes mental impairment. That's different to reaching a judgement based on behaviour alone - psychology is pseudo-scientific.

hmm. i think psychology is based a statistical average that is observed and documented over periods of time..more empirical and not a define science at all..as now we are on the DSMIV...but unlike tom cruisesays, it is relevant and proven over time ....

Well Tom Cruise cannot offer anything other than an unqualified opinion, so certainly I agree. Not to dismiss the benefits of psychiatry, its clearly not without merit, but I don't think its purely empirical in the same way as the conventional sciences, or conventional medicine for that matter.

As I see it, psychiatry is more about a consensus of subjective opinion rather than anything that can be measured conventionally in the scientific tradition.

don't totally disagree on that at all..it is a collection of certain observed or reported behaviors..thoughts or patterns...that fit a description of a pattern..some is organic in nateure...and some genetic in nature 9 bi-polar is chemical )

yeap, may not have all the diagnosed elements of depression..may be seasonal or dysthmia
