Egypt to send South Africa skilled personnel

2008/07/30

EGYPTIAN President Hosni Mubarak arrived at the Union Buildings yesterday where he was officially welcomed by President Thabo Mbeki.

Mubarak's visit is the first of its kind by an Egyptian president to the Republic of South Africa since the country's liberation from apartheid.

The state visit is aimed at cementing ties between the two countries and to improve bilateral trade, among other things.

After the closed-door talks, Egypt promised to provide South Africa with skilled professionals, such as doctors and engineers

The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on economic co-operation that is specifically aimed at enhancing trade between the two nations.

Current trade stands at only R500million per annum. South African exports to Egypt are mainly base metals, vehicles and chemicals, while imports from Egypt are textiles, stone, machinery and vegetable products. — Sapa-DDC
