Just had a 3.6 by Chino Hills again.....they need to be decreasing, not increasing!!!

That's not quite how it works....

Oh do tell, earthquake expert....

Never claimed to be an expert, though I have been through a number of quakes. The aftershocks do diminish in frequency and, generally, in magnitude, over a few days after the initial shock, but the magnitude of each successive aftershock isn't necessarily smaller than the previous one. There can be significant fluctuations in magnitude.

Earthquake Procedures - Employee Instructions:

• Duck down under a desk or sturdy furniture,

I read recently that getting under a desk or the like isn't the best idea. Often people are crushed under furniture they were hiding under when it collapsed. Crouching next to furniture is better, since if the ceiling falls, it will land on and crush the furniture, but a cavity will be created next to the furniture.

Very true. Ducking in doorways and furniture is not good. You should get next to a table not under it. Its the "law of triangles" or something. I think if you google it you can find out about that. I just stand where I am an pray for the best, haha.

well when it all started I didn't know what to do, even though I'm sure I've read all this advice before.

do little kids in California have drills for this sort of thing in school? We used to have tornado drills in Michigan.

When I'm not sure...I just think what Chuck Norris would do.

Probably something similar to the first Superman movie - dive into the earth and push apart the tectonic plates with his bare hands...

Oh my gosh! I miss superman movies. I gotta get those on a DVD collection or something. They're the best Saturday afternoon movies.

Not sure if they have drills, but when someone on the news said about getting under something sturdy, my son shouts out "no, you don't do that, you'll be crushed, you curl up next to it" so I guess he does know what to do.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

yeah I didn't know what to do either so I just sat there by my computer in shock for a bit and then got up and stood in the bathroom doorway...

yeah we had drills every year. They tell you to get under your desk  . They also show you how to carry a wounded classmate. It was alwyas a fun day cause we got to hang out on the playground all day as our "safe spot".

We did when I was in school... of course, back then they were still telling us to get under our desks. Hopefully, that part has been revised.

As I said, in my son's school they have been given the correct information, he remembers it and is confident enough to tell someone who says do that that they are wrong!

I haven't read every page and the last article I read said there wasn't any major injuries, so I am glad to hear that. Stay safe everyone, I don't know exactly how you do that in this kind of situation, but be safe!

Yup....I concur.

A mathmatical expression for the rate of aftershocks as a function of time (t) and magnitude (M):

rate(t,M) = 10(a + b(Mm - M)) * (t+c)-p

where and a, b, c, and p are constants and Mm is the magnitude of the mainshock. Once these parameters are determined for a sequence, the probability of an aftershock of magnitude M1 or greatercan be determined.

(^ this is true but I'm funnin with ya.)

It boils down to this. One quake can rupture another fault, and so on, causing a bit of a domino effect. Those being the aftershocks. Depending on the subsequent fault that gets jarred 'loose' (for lack of a better way to phrase it), the intensity can be close to that of the initial quake. That's why some aftershocks can be rather strong.
